Limerick City And County Council
Limerick City and County Council () is the local authority of Limerick City and County in Ireland. It came into operation on 1 June 2014 after the 2014 local elections. It was formed by the merger of Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council under the provisions of the Local Government Reform Act 2014. As a city and county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 40 elected members. The Mid-West is a strategic planning area within the Southern Region in Ireland. It is a NUTS Level III statistical region of Ireland (coded IE051). King John's Castle (Limerick)
King John's Castle () also known as Limerick Castle is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon. Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John of England in 1200. Some of the external walls, towers and fortifications remain, and the site is open for visitors. The remains of a Viking settlement were uncovered during archaeological excavations at the site in 1900. The castle experienced five sieges during the 17th century. The walls were severely damaged during the 1642 siege when the castle was occupied by Protestants fleeing the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and was besieged by an Irish Confederate force under Garret Barry. Pery Square
Pery Square () is a Georgian Terrace located in the Newtown Pery area of Limerick city, Ireland. The terrace was constructed as a speculative development by the Pery Square Tontine Company between 1835 and 1838. The square was named in honour of the politician Edmund Sexton Pery. The terrace is notable as one of the finest examples of late Georgian architecture in Limerick and Ireland. History The architect James Pain supervised the construction of the terrace and may well have been responsible for the design. The contractor was Pierse Creagh from Ennis. By 1838, the houses forming this terrace were let to tenants. The tontine development was the only area of square that was finished. The remaining plots (around the planned square) which were earmarked for development in Davis Ducart's plan for Newtown Pery were never realised and were left undeveloped. John Moran (born 1965/1966) is an Irish politician who was elected as the Mayor of Limerick, following the 2024 Limerick mayoral election. He was inaugurated on 21 June 2024. Early life Born in Birmingham, Moran was raised on his family's farm in Patrickswell, County Limerick and later in Dooradoyle. He attended St Paul's national school in Dooradoyle, and CBS Sexton Street in Limerick. He obtained a law degree at University College Dublin, followed by a master's from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Career Following his master's degree, Moran passed the New York state bar and worked as a lawyer on Wall Street for three years. He returned to Ireland in 1990 to attain an Irish law qualification, before returning to the United States to run the New York office of McCann Fitzgerald. The People's Park is a park located by Pery Square in Limerick, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, just west of the railway station and bus terminal. At the northern edge of the park is the Limerick City Gallery of Art. History The park was initially developed as part of the Pery Square development in the Newtown Pery, Limerick, Newtown Pery area of central Limerick. This development commenced in 1835 and the associated park was a keyholders-only park. The plan was to surround the park with housing for the more affluent members of society - Pery Square was intended to be a complete Georgian square with the Georgian terraces enclosing a central park, similar in layout to Merrion Square or Mountjoy Square in Dublin, albeit more modest in scale.
