Letran Knights Basketball
The Letran Knights basketball is the collegiate men’s basketball program of the Colegio de San Juan de Letran. The Knights have won 20 championships since joining the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It is the second winningest team in the NCAA, just behind the San Beda Red Lions basketball, San Beda Red Lions. History Pre-war: first championship The Letran basketball team found its humble beginnings in ''Liga Catolica'' until the 1920s. Letran then joined the NCAA in 1928. Letran College withdrew, however, in 1933, after a dispute over a decision of one of its team member during the Letran-Ateneo basketball game. Letran then later rejoined the league in 1936. Colegio De San Juan De Letran
The Colegio de San Juan de Letran (), also referred to by its acronym CSJL, is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution owned and run by the friars of the Order of Preachers in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. It was founded in 1620. Colegio de San Juan de Letran has the distinction of being the oldest college in the Philippines and the oldest secondary institution in Asia. The school has produced Philippine presidents, revolutionary heroes, poets, legislators, members of the clergy, jurists, and it is also one of the only Philippine schools that has produced several Catholic saints who lived and studied on its campus. The school's patron saint is St. John the Baptist. Jacinto Ciria Cruz
Jacinto "Jumping Jack" Ciria Cruz (August 16, 1910 – December 25, 1944) was a Filipino basketball player and coach. Ciria Cruz played for the UST Growling Tigers, University of Santo Tomas men's basketball team. He was part of the team that won the gold medal in the 1930 and 1934 Far Eastern Games and also represented the Philippines at the 1936 Summer Olympics as a member of the country's national basketball team. He later ventured into coaching different collegiate squads. In 1938, Ciria Cruz took over as Letran basketball coach from Herminio Silva, who had earlier inherited the job from Ciria Cruz when the latter played in the Berlin Olympics. The Battle of Intramuros is the rivalry between three teams: the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, and Mapúa University Cardinals. All three representing universities are within walking distance from each other at Manila's Intramuros district. The rivalry is played at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines). The De La Salle Green Archers and Lady Archers are the varsity teams representing De La Salle University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, among other leagues. The JRU Heavy Bombers and Lady Bombers are the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines), National Collegiate Athletic Association varsity teams of the Jose Rizal University. The university's juniors team are the JRU Light Bombers. The Heavy Bombers basketball team also plays in the PBA Developmental League. Freddie Nelle Webb (born November 24, 1942) is a Filipino retired basketball player and coach, former politician, and television and radio personality. Education He completed his elementary education at San Beda College and his degree in Bachelor of Arts in English at Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Personal life He is married to Elizabeth Pagaspas of Tanauan, Batangas with whom he has six children, among them Hubert, Pinky, and Jason Webb. Basketball career Webb first played for the Letran Knights (1960–1964) and became a star for the team.
