''The New Model'' (French: ''Les Débuts du modèle'') (''The Model's Début'' or ''The Model's First Session'') is a c. 1770 oil-on-canvas painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, acquired by Édouard André before his marriage and now in the Musée Jacquemart-André. The middle-aged man standing on the right side is the painter holding a stick, the paint brush. The woman is the topic of his painting, she is what he wants to paint. The older woman in the middle offers the younger woman to him. Her bare chest is a sign of her willingness to cooperate in this incestuous scenario. This painting can be compared to Fragonard's ''The Swing'' where an older man orchestrates the encounter of two young lovers. Jean-Honoré Fragonard
Jean-Honoré Fragonard (; 5 April 1732 (birth/baptism certificate) – 22 August 1806) was a French painter and printmaker whose late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. One of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings (not counting drawings and etchings), of which only five are dated. Among his most popular works are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism. Édouard François André (; 1833–1894) was a French banker, politician, soldier, and art collector. He was the husband of Nélie Jacquemart-André, the society painter. Their art collection is preserved at the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. Biography Son of Ernest André (1803–1864), Edouard André was born into a family of rich banker Protestants, native to the southeast of France (Nîmes dans le Gard), who flourished during the Second French Empire. Edouard André lost his mother at the age of two. In firm support of Napoleon III and sensitive to Saint-Simonian ideas, the Andre family was involved in financing the modernization of France and large companies of the imperial regime. He succeeded his father as MP of Gard, and as such, he was elected on 29 May 1864. The Musée Jacquemart-André (, ) is a private museum located at 158 Boulevard Haussmann in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, 8th arrondissement of Paris. The museum was created from the private home of Édouard André (art collector), Édouard André (1833–1894) and Nélie Jacquemart (1841–1912) to display the art they collected during their lives. ''The Swing'' (), also known as ''The Happy Accidents of the Swing'' (, the original title), is an 18th-century oil painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard in the Wallace Collection in London. It is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Rococo era, and is Fragonard's best-known work. Description The painting depicts an elegantly dressed young woman on a swing. A smiling young man, hiding in the bushes below and to the left, points towards her billowing dress with hat in hand. A smiling older man, who is nearly hidden in the shadows on the right, propels the swing with a pair of ropes, as a small white dog barks nearby.
