Leeming, Western Australia
Leeming is a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. It is divided between the three local government areas of the City of Melville, the City of Cockburn (south) and the City of Canning (north-east). It is located approximately south of the Perth central business district and east of Fremantle. History The area was previously part of Jandakot and was predominantly agricultural until the 1970s, having been laid out by surveyor George Waters Leeming (1857–1902) in 1886. Three roadsKing Road, Leeming Road (the southern boundary) and Beasley Roadaccessed the area. In 1971, the suburb of Leeming was gazetted, although construction did not commence until approximately 1976, possibly as early as 1975. Leeming is a village in North Yorkshire, England. Geography Leeming lies a mile east of the current A1(M) motorway, A1(M) road, south of the larger village of Leeming Bar and north of the small hamlet of Londonderry, North Yorkshire, Londonderry. Nearby is the RAF base of RAF Leeming. Before the opening of the £1 million bypass in October 1961, the A1 passed through the village following the path of Dere Street, parallel and close to the main runway of the airfield. Climate History The name derives from the river-name, which turned settlement-name. The etymology may be linked with Common Brittonic, British *lemanio "elm-tree", but there are other possibilities. An archaeological survey undertaken on Kelsall Villa (a Roman site near to Leeming Bar) describes it as deriving from the river with ''Leming'' meaning bright stream. Leeming Bar is a village in the civil parish of Aiskew and Leeming Bar, in North Yorkshire, England. The village lay on the original Great North Road (Dere Street) before being bypassed. It is now home to a large industrial estate and the main operating site of the Wensleydale Railway. Governance Historically Leeming Bar was a hamlet in the wapentake of Hallikeld and a township in the ecclesiastical parish of Gatenby, part of the historic North Riding of Yorkshire An electoral ward in the same name exists. This ward stretches north to Kirkby Fleetham with a total population of approximately 1800 (as of 2005) and of 1,966 at the 2011 census. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the district of Hambleton, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council. RAF Leeming
Royal Air Force Leeming or more simply RAF Leeming is a Royal Air Force station located near Leeming, North Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 1940 and was jointly used by the RAF and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Between 1950 and 1991, it operated mostly as a training base with Quick Reaction Force (QRF) Panavia Tornado F3 fighters based there in the latter stages of the Cold War and into the early 21st century. Since 2006, it has become the home of the deployable RAF communications cadre ( No. 90 Signals Unit RAF) and the home of No. 135 Expeditionary Air Wing. History The area at the extreme western edge of the base was used in the 1930s by local flying enthusiasts. It took the name of ''Londonderry Aerodrome'' as it was closest to the hamlet of Londonderry in North Yorkshire. Leeming, West Yorkshire
Oxenhope is a village and civil parish near Keighley in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The population was 2,476 at the time of the 2001 census which had increased to 2,626 at the 2011 Census. Oxenhope railway station is the terminus for the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway heritage railway. History Oxenhope's name derives from the Old English ''hop'' which means valley head, so Oxenhope literally means ''Oxen Valley Head''. The industrialisation of the village came about through the cloth and wool trade and by 1850, Oxenhope was host to over 20 mills. Leeming Reservoir was constructed between 1872 and 1873 to supply the many mills in the area. David Adams Leeming (born February 26, 1937) is an American philologist who is Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Connecticut, and a specialist in comparative literature of mythology. Biography David Adams Leeming was born on February 26, 1937, in Peekskill, New York, the son of Frank Clifford Leeming, an Episcopal priest, and Margaret Adams Reeder.
