Leading Sire In Great Britain And Ireland
The title of champion, or leading, sire of Horse racing, racehorses in Great Britain and Ireland is awarded to the stallion whose offspring have won the most prize money in Britain and Ireland during the flat racing season. The current (2023) champion is Frankel (horse), Frankel, who earned his first title in 2021. Unlike the similar title for leading sire in North America, the stallion in question does not need to have resided in Great Britain or Ireland during his stud career, although the vast majority have done so. Northern Dancer is the most notable example of a North American-based stallion who won this title. The Northern Dancer sire line has dominated the list for the last several decades, mostly through his son Sadler's Wells (horse), Sadler's Wells (14 titles) and grandson Galileo (12 titles). Thoulouse Barb
The Thoulouse Barb was a foundation sire of the Thoroughbred breed. Along with Curwen's Bay Barb he was given as a present to Louis XIV by the King of Morocco. They were then purchased and imported to England in 1698 by Henry Curwen. He was later owned by Sir J. Parsons. The Thoulouse Barb was the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1723. His most famous offspring were the sire ''Tifter'', as well as the undefeated mare ''Molly''. His daughter, the Ryegate Mare, was the dam of Cinnamon. Crab (horse)
Crab also known as Old Crab and Mr. Panton's Crab (1722 – December 1750) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After retiring from racing he became a successful stallion and was British Champion sire in 1748, 1749 and 1750. He was owned by the 1st Earl of Portmore until purchased by Mr. Cotton and then Thomas Panton. Background Crab was a grey colt bred by Charles Pelham and was foaled in 1722. He was a son of Alcock's Arabian out of a daughter of Basto. He was sold to David Colyear, 1st Earl of Portmore when he was young. Although grey was a fairly common color in the foundation stock of the Thoroughbred, it became increasingly rare over time. Blacklegs (foaled 1728) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire who was the champion sire of Great Britain in 1746. He was bred by William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire, and owned by his son William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire. Background Blacklegs was a bay colt bred by William Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Devonshire, and foaled in 1728. He was sired by the Duke of Devonshire's Flying Childers, who was undefeated in six starts as a racecourse. Bolton ( , locally ) is a town in Greater Manchester in England. Bartlett's Childers (originally known as Young Childers or Bleeding Childers; foaled 1716) was an important Thoroughbred sire in the 18th century. Background Bartlett's Childers was foaled in 1716. Bred by Leonard Childers, he was a son of the Darley Arabian and Betty Leedes. He was a full-brother to the undefeated Flying Childers, but was never trained to race. It was once thought that Betty Leedes only produced Flying Childers and a foal that died young, but it is now strongly believed that she did produce another foal by the Darley Arabian (Bartlett's Childers). Bloody Buttocks was a British Thoroughbred sire who was the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1739. He was owned by John Crofts. Background Bloody Buttocks was a grey Arabian horse bred by Mr. Crofts, but his pedigree was never published. The horse found his unusual name from a red mark on his hip. Partner (also known as Croft's Partner or Old Partner) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won six of his seven races before being retired to stud where he was the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland four times, and continued the Byerley Turk sire-line. Racing career Partner's breeder sold him to Mr. Cotton of Sussex, who in turn sold him to Lord Halifax. Lord Halifax raced the colt with great success over four mile courses. He was unbeaten in 1723 and 1724, taking the following year off to come back to the track in 1726, beating Sloven in a match race. His only loss was in a race in 1728 to Smiling Ball, after which he was sold to John Croft to begin his breeding career. Flying Childers
Flying Childers (1715–1741) was a famous undefeated 18th-century thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1714 at Carr House, Warmsworth, Doncaster, and is sometimes considered as the first truly great racehorse in the history of thoroughbreds and the first to catch the public imagination. Breeding Flying Childers was sired by the great Darley Arabian, one of the three foundation stallions of the thoroughbred breed. His dam, Betty Leedes, was by (Old) Careless, and she was inbred to Spanker in the second and third generations (2x3). Betty Leedes was also the dam of the unraced, but successful sire, Bartlett's or Bleeding Childers who was also by the Darley Arabian.
