Le Courrier Français (1884–1914)
''Le Courrier français'' () was an illustrated weekly founded and edited by Jules Roques. It appeared from 1884 to 1914. History Under the direction of Jules Roques, ''Le Courrier français'' became the most representative satirical organ of the time. Notable writers included Maurice Bouchor, Raoul Ponchon, Octave Lebesgue, Georges Montorgueil, Hugues Delorme and Jean Lorrain. Illustrators included Adolphe Willette, David Ossipovitch Widhopff, Jean-Louis Forain, Jules Chéret, Hermann-Paul, Henri Pille and Pierre Jeannot. The magazine included sections on literature, fine arts, theater, medicine and finance. Until 1895 the newspaper represented the light and sarcastic spirit of ''fin de siècle'' Paris, and welcomed elite illustrators who met every evening at the ''Rat Mort'' café in Montmartre. Emmanuel Robbe (16 December 1872, in Paris – 5 July 1936, in Paris) was a French painter and printmaker, best remembered as a proponent of the aquatint and à la poupée techniques in etching. A graduate of the Académie Julian and Beaux-Arts de Paris, his works were regularly published in the magazines ''Les Maîtres de l'Affiche'', '' L'Estampe Moderne'', and '' Cocorico''. Pierre-Auguste Lamy (1 July 1827 – 6 October 1883) was a French engraver, lithographer and watercolourist. Alfred Choubrac (30 December 1853 – 25 July 1902) was a French painter, illustrator, draughtsman, poster artist and costume designer. Together with Jules Chéret he is considered to be one of the pioneers of the modern coloured and illustrated poster of the Belle Époque in France, in particular in Paris. Early life Alfred Choubrac was born in Montmartre (Paris). The Choubrac brothers began making posters very early in their career; from 1875, they applied modern colour and typographic techniques, combined with graphics, using chromolithography. In the early 1870s, the Choubrac brothers and Jules Chéret (known as "the father of the modern poster") reduced the cost of colour lithography introducing technical advances and the colour poster gained significance as an attractive means of promotion and advertisements. René Georges Hermann-Paul (27 December 1864 – 23 June 1940) was a French artist. He was born in Paris and died in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. He was a well-known illustrator whose work appeared in numerous newspapers and periodicals. His fine art was displayed in gallery exhibitions alongside Édouard Vuillard, Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Toulouse-Lautrec.
