Lahti–Heinola Railway
The Lahti–Heinola railway (, ), also called the Heinola railway (, ) is a 1,524 mm (5 ft) railway in Finland, connecting the towns and stations of Lahti and Heinola in the region of Päijät-Häme. History The prospect of building a railway reaching from Lahti to Mikkeli via Heinola was brought up for the first time after the completion of the Riihimäki–Saint Petersburg railway in the planning process of the Savonia railway. Even though the line ended up being built beginning from Kouvola instead, the idea of connecting Heinola to the fledgling railway network was brought up by the town's representatives in the Finnish Diet's sessions through the 1880s to the early 1900s, with little success. In part due to efforts from two former members of parliament, Mikeal Soininen and Oskari Orasmaa, both hailing from Heinola, the final decision to build the railway was finally made by the Finnish parliament on 4 November 1909. Helsinki Central Station (, ) ( HEC) is the main station for commuter rail and long-distance trains departing from Helsinki, Finland. About 200,000 people "pass through the station" every day, half of whom are train passengers. Ellen Svinhufvud ( Timgren; 23 December 1869 – 24 August 1953) was the wife of Finland's third president, Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, serving as the First Lady of Finland from 1931 until 1937. She married Pehr Evind Svinhufvud in 1889, and the couple had six children. She was active in the women's paramilitary Lotta Svärd organisation, as well as in the Martha organisation. Pehr Evind Svinhufvud af Qvalstad (, 15 December 1861 – 29 February 1944) was the third president of Finland from 1931 to 1937. Heinolan maalaiskunta (; literally "Heinola Rural Municipality") is a former municipality in Päijänne Tavastia, Finland. It was established in 1848. It surrounded Heinola town and was united to Heinola in 1997. Most of its surface area was forest. The markka (; ; currency symbol, sign: mk; ISO 4217, ISO code: FIM), also known as the Finnish mark, was the currency of Finland from 1860 until 28 February 2002, when it ceased to be legal tender. The markka was divided into 100 penny, pennies (; ), abbreviated as "p". At the point of conversion, the rate was fixed at €1 = 5.94573 mk. The markka was replaced by the euro (€), which had been introduced, in cash form, on 1 January 2002. Ahtiala is the 13th district of the city of Lahti, in the region of Päijät-Häme, Finland. It borders the districts of Viuha and Seesta in the north, Kunnas in the east, Koiskala in the southeast, Myllypohja in the south and Kytölä in the west.
