L'Isle-Verte
L'Isle-Verte () is a small municipality located along the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, in the Rivière-du-Loup Regional County Municipality of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, Quebec, Canada. The name of the village refers to '' Île Verte'' (French for "Green Island"), a nearby island that is not within its municipal boundaries. Village and island are joined by a seasonal ferry. It is known for its lamb, fed in a salted marsh, a luxury product in Quebec. Its marshes along the Saint Lawrence River are a protected bird sanctuary part of the Baie de l'Isle-Verte Ramsar wetland. On January 23, 2014, a major fire destroyed the Résidence du Havre, a home for the elderly, killing thirty-two residents. L'Isle-Verte Nursing Home Fire
The L'Isle-Verte nursing home fire took place around 12:35 a.m. on January 23, 2014, at the Résidence du Havre nursing home in L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, Canada, killing 32 people and injuring 15. Casualties The impacted wing of the building burned to the ground, leaving only the elevator shaft intact. A number of residents were taken to hospital, including 13 people who had carbon monoxide poisoning or fell ill. Officials said rescuers were unable to carry out a complete evacuation because of the intensity of the fire. Many of the victims used wheelchairs and walkers. Twenty seven bodies were recovered during an initial search, which ended February 1. A Montreal coroner's lab was to identify the remaining five missing by forensic DNA analysis of bone fragments and remains from the site. As of January 21, 2015, two of these five were identified. Baie de l'Isle-Verte (French for "Green Island Bay") is a coastal wetland along the southern shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada. It was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on May 27, 1987, is classified as a globally significant Important Bird Area, and contains a National Wildlife Area and Migratory Bird Sanctuary. It is located in the Rivière-du-Loup Regional County Municipality, in the municipality of L'Isle-Verte. Within the wetland is a 797 hectare area managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service, of which 406 hectares was designated a National Wildlife Area in 1980. Charles Borromée Rouleau (born: December 16, 1840 L'Isle-Verte, Quebec, L'Isle Verte, Lower Canada- died: August 25, 1901 Rouleauville, North-West Territories) was a 19th-century Canadian politician, lawyer, judge and writer. He served as stipendiary magistrate and justice of the Supreme Court of the North-West Territories, as well as legal advisor to the Northwest Territories Legislature. Early life Rouleau began his legal career when he was called to the Bar of Quebec, bar in Quebec on December 16, 1868. He later became an inspector for the Ottawa and Pontiac Counties Catholic School Districts.
