L'Alcoran De Mahomet
("The Qur'an of Muhammad") was the third Western translation of the Qur'an, preceded by '' Lex Mahumet pseudoprophete'' (" heLaw of the False Prophet Muhammad") and the translation by Mark of Toledo. The translation was made from Arabic into French by André du Ryer in 1647. Two years later, in 1649, Alexander Ross translated it to English from French, and included the following title-page: :''"The Alcoran of Mahomet, Translated out of Arabick into French. By sir Ryer, Lord of Malezair, and Resident for the French King, at ALEXANDRIA. And Newly Englished, for the satisfaction of all that desire to look into the Turkish Vanities. Mark of Toledo (fl. 1193-1216) was a Spanish physician and a canon of Toledo. Biography He produced one of the earliest translations of the Qur'an into Latin while working at the Toledo School of Translators. André Du Ryer
André Du Ryer, Lord of La Garde-Malezair (b. Marcigny, Bourgogne, c. 1580; d. 1660 or 1672) was a French orientalist who produced the third western translation of the Quran. Biography Du Ryer was diplomatic envoy to Constantinople and French consul to Alexandria. In 1630, he published a grammar of the Turkish language in Latin. In 1634, he translated Gulistan, or the Empire of the Roses, by the Persian writer Saadi. In 1647, he published the first integral translation of the Quran into a European vernacular language (the previous two translations from the Arabic had been into Latin). The book was interdicted by the Council of Conscience under the pressure of one of its members, Vincent de Paul. This censure did not impede the book's diffusion. Alexander Ross (writer)
Alexander Ross (c. 1590–1654) was a prolific Scottish writer and controversialist. He was Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Charles I. Life Ross was born in Aberdeen, and entered King's College, Aberdeen after completing his studies at Aberdeen Grammar School, in 1604. About 1616 he succeeded Thomas Parker in the mastership of the free school at Southampton, an appointment which he owed to Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford. By 1622 he had been appointed, through William Laud's influence, one of Charles I's chaplains, and in that year appeared ''The First and Second Book of Questions and Answers upon the Book of Genesis, by Alexander Ross of Aberdeen, preacher at St. Mary's, near Southampton, and one of his Majesty's Chaplains.''
