KwaMashu
KwaMashu is a township north of Durban, South Africa. The name honours Sir Marshall Campbell and means ''Place of Marshall''. KwaMashu is bordered by Newlands East to the south, Newlands West to the west, Ntuzuma to the north, Phoenix to the north-east, Mount Edgecombe to the east and Durban North to the south-east. Arts KwaMashu is notable for its lively performing arts scene, which includes Maskandi, hip hop, pansula dancing, dance, drama, and football. Metrorail KwaZulu-Natal is a network of commuter rail services in and around the city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. Ntuzuma
Ntuzuma is a town in eThekwini in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. With a population of 114,231 (Census 2001), Ntuzuma is the youngest of the four "PINK" (Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu) programme townships, and was built by the Durban City in the 1970s. The spatial and infrastructural developments of Ntuzuma have emerged incrementally in different sections, and have, to a large extent, influenced the varying service levels, political affiliations and tenure arrangements that prevail in the area. Large tracts of land are informally occupied due to the pressure for housing and its relative accessibility. With the RDP Housing Programme, a number of formal houses have been given to the people, which has contributed positively to the town's development plans. Newlands East is a township located 17 kilometres (11 mi) north-west of the Durban CBD in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Mount Edgecombe
Mount Edgecombe or Mt Edgecombe is a town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, situated just north of Durban, which forms part of eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, eThekwini, the Greater Durban Metropolitan area. Much of the suburb is cordoned off as a gated settlement comprising resorts, golf courses and a retirement home. It was previously a sugar growing area. Phoenix, Durban
Phoenix is a South African town about 25 kilometres (15 mi) northwest of Durban Central, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was established as a town by the apartheid government in 1979, but it has a long history of Indian occupation. It is associated with the Phoenix Settlement, built by Mahatma Gandhi. In 2021, riots broke out in KwaZulu-Natal after the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma. The riots also occurred in Phoenix and armed citizen militias were formed. Sir Marshall Campbell
Sir Marshall Campbell (1848–1917) was a pioneer of the sugar industry in the Colony of Natal and parliamentarian concerned with Bantu affairs. The ''Conquering Hero'', a brig of 320 tons under Captain Cockburn, sailed from the Clyde (Glasgow/Greenock) with 127 settlers on 29 March 1850. Marshall Campbell landed in Durban on 28 June 1850 with his parents, William John and Agnes Campbell. They had come under the Byrne Settler scheme, which between 1849 and 1851, brought some 2 500 British emigrants to Natal. Shortly after their arrival in Durban, Marshall's father was awarded a contract to construct the harbour's North Pier. This enabled him to buy land on the Umdhloti River, and develop his farm which he called ''Muckleneuk'', Scots for 'great bend'. The house was designed by Frank Fleming, one of Herbert Baker's partners. By the time he died in 1865 aged 44, he had become a prominent sugar cane planter and miller.
