Kirkham aka Kirkam-in-Amounderness Hundred, Amounderness is a market town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the Borough of Fylde in Lancashire, England, midway between Blackpool and Preston, Lancashire, Preston and adjacent to the town of Wesham. It owes its existence to Carr Hill upon which it was built and which was the location of a Castra, Roman fort. At the 2011 United Kingdom census, census of 2011, it had a population 3,304 (Kirkham South) plus 3,890 (Kirkham North), giving a total of 7,194. By the 2021 United Kingdom census, census of 2021 the total had risen to 3,217 (Kirkham South) plus 4,666 (Kirkham North), giving a total of 7,883. Kirkham, North Yorkshire
Kirkham is a village in the civil parish of Westow, in North Yorkshire, England, close to Malton, North Yorkshire, Malton, situated in the Howardian Hills alongside the River Derwent, Yorkshire, River Derwent, and is notable for the nearby ruins of Kirkham Priory, an Augustinian establishment. Kirkham was historically an extra parochial area in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It became a civil parish in 1866. On 1 April 1935 the civil parish was abolished and merged into the civil parish of Firby, Westow, Firby. In 1931 the parish had a population of 31. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was a part of the Ryedale district and when the parish of Firby was abolished it joined the parish of Westow. Kirkham was served by Kirkham Abbey railway station on the York to Scarborough Line between 1845 and 1930. John Oxley (1785-1828), an explorer of south-east Australia, was born here. Kirkham is a suburb of the Macarthur Region of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia in Camden Council. The suburb is largely undeveloped at present and possibly will remain so since much of it is on low-lying flood-prone land. History The area now known as Kirkham was originally home to the Muringong, southernmost of the Darug people. In 1805 John Macarthur established his property at Camden where he raised merino sheep. In 1810, explorer John Oxley was granted nearby, which he named ''Kirkham''. Kirkham has figured prominently in the 2013 - 2018 TV series A Place to Call Home. The fictional house known as ''Ash Park'' is actually a property called Camelot, which is situated on Oxley's old property at Kirkham. Oxley's original home was called ''Kirkham'', after his birthplace in Yorkshire. The stables are all that remain. HM Prison Kirkham is a Category D men's prison, located southwest of Kirkham in Lancashire, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service. History RAF Kirkham The prison's location was originally the site of RAF Kirkham, which was built by George Wimpey on of land bordering the A583 road from Blackpool to Preston. Work commenced in 1939 and the camp opened in 1940 as a training camp for RAF tradesmen. Up to 1945 it trained 72,000 British and allied service men and women. In November 1941 Kirkham became the main armament training centre for the RAF, with 21 different trades and 86 different courses on equipment and weapons. Pupils came not only from the Commonwealth of Nations, but the United States, the Netherlands, Poland, France, Norway, Czechoslovakia and Belgium. Kirkham Priory
The ruins of Kirkham Priory are situated on the banks of the River Derwent, Yorkshire, River Derwent, at Kirkham, North Yorkshire, Kirkham, North Yorkshire, England. The Augustinians, Augustinian priory was founded in the 1120s by Walter l'Espec, lord of nearby Helmsley, who also built Rievaulx Abbey. The priory was surrendered in 8 December 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Legend has it that Kirkham was founded in remembrance of l'Espec's only son who had died nearby as a consequence of his horse being startled by a boar. The area was later used to test the D-Day landing vehicles, and was visited by Winston Churchill. The ruins are now listed building, Grade I listed and a scheduled monument in the care of English Heritage. Kirkham House is a late medieval stone house in Paignton, Devon, England. It is believed to be a 14th or 15th century building. The house was designated a Grade II* listed building on 13 March 1951. History There is no documentary evidence of who built Kirkham House or when. The design suggests that it is of 14th or 15th century origin, and it has been called "The Priest's House", suggesting the residence of a church official, or a priest of the Kirkham Chantry. The house may have been built as the residence of a prosperous local merchant. Mrs Ada Frances Jennings bequeathed the house to the nation in 1960, together with a sum of money for its repair. The stone and plasterwork have been extensively renovated, but many of the original oak beams and carvings can still be seen.
