King's Guard (Thailand)
The King's Guard (; ) is a ceremonial designation given by the Monarchy of Thailand to the various units within the Royal Thai Armed Forces. Practical and real security of the Chakri dynasty, Royal family has since 1992 been provided by the Royal Security Command, which is an agency that is completely independent of the armed forces. History The first Royal Guards unit was established by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1859, when he was still the heir. Initially, the Royal Guards were servants with duties such as scaring crows, which led to commoners referring to them as the "Mahat Lek Lai Ka," roughly translated as "''Scarecrow Corps''". When he succeeded his father in 1868, King Chulalongkorn took his Royal Guard and formed a 24-strong Royal Bodyguard, referred to as the "Thahan Song Lo" (Two-Dozen soldiers"). The 1st King Close Bodyguard Regiment, King Close Bodyguard () (กรม ทม.ที่ 1 มหด.รอ.) is a King's Guard (Thailand), King's Guard regiment under the Royal Security Command. The regiment is divided into three battalions, all of them based in Bangkok. The regiment is the only unit of the Royal Thai Armed Forces with the designation ''Mahat Lek Rajawallop'' (); meaning the king's close bodyguards, translated as the ''King's Own Bodyguards''. The unit was first established by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1859, whilst he was still a young prince. One of the primary roles of the regiment is to provide security and protection to members of the Chakri dynasty, Thai royal family as well as the ceremonial escort and guarding of the royal palaces. The 1st Field Artillery Regiment, King's Guard () (ป.๑ รอ.) is an Artillery Regiment of the Royal Thai Army, it is currently a part of the 1st Infantry Division, King's Guard. The 4th Tank Battalion, 1st Division, King's Guard () (ม.พัน ๔ พล.๑ รอ.) is a King's Guard Armoured Cavalry Battalion of the Royal Thai Army (RTA), it is currently a part of the 1st Division, King's Guard. History 4th Tank Battalion, 1st Division, King's Guard was originally founded in 1930 from after a transformation of 2nd Tank Battalion in Saraburi. The first commander is M.L. Tor Panomwan. Eventually in 1944 the government shut down the 4th Tank Battalion in Karnchanaburi then later transformed the 6th Tank Battalion into a new 4th Tank Battalion and in 1951 the 4th Battalion was changed again to 7th Battalion. The 4th Battalion was re-founded in 1973 as the 2nd Tank Battalion with type M24 tanks from U.S. in Phra Nakhon province (Bangkok nowadays). The unit was established again on 1 April 1951. Sirikit (born ''Mom Rajawongse'' Sirikit Kitiyakara; 12 August 1932) is a member of the Thai royal family who was List of Thai royal consorts#Rattanakosin Kingdom, Queen of Thailand from 28 April 1950 to 13 October 2016 as the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). She is the mother of King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X). She met Bhumibol in Paris, where her father was Thai ambassador. They married in 1950, shortly before Bhumibol's coronation. The 2nd Infantry Division, Queen Sirikit's Guard () (พล.๒ รอ.) also known as Mechanized Infantry Division () is the only Queen's Guard Mechanized Infantry Division of the Royal Thai Army (RTA). It is currently part of the First Army Area. The division was founded by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1910. In 1988 the division was designated a King's Guard unit by cabinet order, however, as a mark of distinction the division and all its subsidiary units were put under the patronage of Queen Sirikit and has since been known as the Queen's Guard.
