Karen People
The Karen ( ), also known as the Kayin, are an ethnolinguistic group of peoples who speak Karenic languages and are indigenous to southern and southeastern Myanmar, including the Irrawaddy Delta, Irrawaddy delta and Kayin State. The Karen account for around 6.69% of the Burmese population. The Karen consist of approximately 20 subgroups, the largest of whom are the S'gaw people, S'gaw and the Pwo peoples. Other Karenic-speaking peoples like the Pa'O people, Pa'O, Karenni people, Karenni, and the Kayan people (Myanmar), Kayan, have formed distinct identities. The ethnic identity of the Karen peoples has significantly been shaped by British colonial rule, Christian missionaries, Decolonization, decolonisation, and sociopolitical developments in Myanmar. The group as a whole is heterogeneous and disparate, as many Karenic ethnic groups do not share a common language, culture, religion, or material characteristics. A pan-Karen ethnic identity is a relatively modern creation, est ...

Karen Languages
The Karen () or Karenic languages are tonal languages spoken by some 4.5 million Karen people. They are of unclear affiliation within the Sino-Tibetan languages. The Karen languages are written using the Karen script. The three main branches are Sgaw (commonly known as Karen), Pwo and Pa'O. Karenni (also known as Kayah or Red Karen) and Kayan (also known as Padaung) are a branch of Karen languages. They are unusual among the Sino-Tibetan languages in having a subject–verb–object word order; other than Karen, Bai and the Chinese languages, Sino-Tibetan languages have a subject–object–verb order. This is likely due to influence from neighboring Mon and Tai languages. Classification Because they differ from other Tibeto-Burman languages in morphology and syntax, Benedict (1972: 2–4, 129) removed the Karen languages from Tibeto-Burman in a Tibeto-Karen branch, but this is no longer accepted. A common geographical classification distinguishes three groups: ;Nort ...

Karen (orangutan)
Karen (born June 11, 1992) is a Sumatran orangutan (''Pongo abelii''), who, on August 27, 1994 at the San Diego Zoo, was the first orangutan to have open heart surgery and in 2021 was among the first non-humans to receive a vaccine for COVID-19. Concerns for the endangered species of Sumatran orangutan at a time when routine open heart surgery was being performed in human babies, combined with a collaboration between the San Diego Zoo and UC San Diego Health, led to the planning of repairing the large hole in the heart in two-year-old Karen. The operation and after-care required the co-operation of more than 100 volunteers and the resulting procedure was successful and widely publicised. Karen became a favorite with zoo visitors, surviving more than 25 years. Karen is the subject of a book by Georgeanne Irvine titled ''Karen’s Heart: The True Story of a Brave Baby Orangutan'', published by Blue Sneaker Press in 2018. Background Wild Sumatran orangutans are critically endange ...
