Kansas, Oklahoma Central And Southwestern Railway
The Kansas, Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway (“KOC&S”) was a railroad which in 1899 built tracks from a point near Caney, Kansas to what became Owasso, Oklahoma. After foreclosure in 1900, it was absorbed into the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (“AT&SF”). History The Kansas, Oklahoma Central and Southwestern Railway Company was incorporated under the laws of both the Territory of Oklahoma on June 14, 1893, and the State of Kansas on August 17, 1894. The railroad had big plans: in order to tap the growing cattle industry, it would run from its headquarters in Cherryvale, Kansas generally southwest through Bartlesville, Oklahoma (then in Indian Territory), on through Guthrie, Oklahoma (then in Oklahoma Territory), and terminate in Vernon, Texas. South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad is a short line railroad which operates of rail lines in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri that used to belong to Missouri Pacific, Frisco and Santa Fe lines. SKOL is a unit of Watco. History Southeast Kansas Railroad The Southeast Kansas Railroad (“SEKR”), incorporated in Kansas on March 17, 1987, became Watco’s first short line. The railway ran about 104 miles from Coffeyville, Kansas to near Nevada, Missouri, at which point it had a connection with the Union Pacific. SKOL The South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad was formed under Kansas Law on November 9, 1990. It originally acquired 287 miles of rail lines from the Santa Fe. Osage Nation
The Osage Nation ( ) () is a Midwestern Native American nation of the Great Plains. The tribe began in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys around 1620 A.D along with other groups of its language family, then migrated west in the 17th century due to Iroquois incursions. The term "Osage" is a French version of the tribe's name, which can be roughly translated as "calm water". The Osage people refer to themselves in their Dhegihan Siouan language as (). By the early 19th century, the Osage had become the dominant power in the region, feared by neighboring tribes. Bird Creek
Bird Creek is a stream in northeast Oklahoma. The main creek is formed from the waters of North Bird Creek, Middle Bird Creek, and South Bird Creek, all of which rise in Osage County. The South and Middle branches of the creek converge at Bluestem Lake. Outflow from the lake is called Middle Bird Creek. North Bird Creek joins Middle Bird Creek northwest of Pawhuska, and from that point on is simply Bird Creek. From Pawhuska, the creek flows southeastward and eastward through the north side of the Tulsa metropolitan area, before reaching its mouth at the Verdigris River near Catoosa. Major tributaries include Birch Creek, Hominy Creek and Mingo Creek. There are numerous minor tributaries, both named and unnamed, that have contributed to historical flooding problems in the Tulsa area. The Eastern Oklahoma Railway was incorporated under the laws of Oklahoma Territory on July 24, 1899. The railroad constructed much of its own track. This included Guthrie junction (Eastern Oklahoma junction) to Cushing junction, 47.9 miles, in the 1900-1902 timeframe; Ripley to Esau Junction (passing through Pawnee), 40.4 miles, also in the 1900-1902 timeframe; Newkirk to Pauls Valley (via Ralston, Cushing and Shawnee), 182.5 miles, in the 1900-1904 timeframe; and, Davis to Sulphur, 9.3 miles, in 1906.
