Kampot (City)
Kampot () is a city in southern Cambodia and the capital of Kampot province. It is situated on the Praek Tuek Chhu River, southeast of the Elephant Mountains, and around from the Gulf of Thailand. Kampot was the capital of the ''Circonscription Résidentielle de Kampot'' under French rule and Cambodia's most important seaport after the loss of the Mekong Delta and before the establishment of Sihanoukville. Its center is, unlike most Cambodian provincial capitals, composed of 19th-century French colonial architecture. The region and town are known for high-quality pepper, which is exported worldwide. It is also known for its fish sauce, sea salt, and durian. Kratié (town)
Kratié (, ), also spelled Kracheh, is the capital of Kratié Province in eastern Cambodia. It is also a ''sangkat'' within Kratié Municipality. Geography The small town has a population of about 38,215 and lies on the banks of the Mekong River. The city is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. Red flowered trees grow in rows along the riverbank. The town includes big islands with white sand beaches within the Mekong. Norodom Of Cambodia
Preah Norodom (, ; born Ang Voddey (, ); 3 February 1834 – 24 April 1904) was King of Cambodia from 19 October 1860 to his death on 24 April 1904. He was the eldest son of King Ang Duong and was a half-brother of Prince Si Votha and King Sisowath. He was elected to the throne in 1860 but would not be crowned until 1864 because Siam held the royal regalia (the royal crown and other artifacts). In 1863, he signed a treaty with France by giving France control over Cambodia's foreign relations in exchange for personal protection against his enemies. The treaty saved Cambodian independence, but French control over Cambodia's internal affairs strengthened continually until the end of his reign (full independence was not restored until 1953). Henri Mouhot
Alexandre Henri Mouhot (15 May 1826 – 10 November 1861) was a French naturalist and explorer of the mid-19th century. He was born in Montbéliard, Doubs, France, near the Swiss border. He died near Luang-Prabang, Laos. He is remembered mostly in connection to Angkor. Mouhot's tomb is located just outside of Ban Phanom, to the east of Luang Prabang. Early life Mouhot traveled throughout Europe with his brother Charles, studying photographic techniques developed by Louis Daguerre. In 1856, he began devoting himself to the study of natural science. Upon reading ''The Kingdom and People of Siam'' by Sir John Bowring in 1857, Mouhot decided to travel to Indochina to conduct a series of botanical expeditions for the collection of new zoological specimens. Ang Duong
Ang Duong ( ; 12 June 1796 – 18 October 1860) was the King of Cambodia from 1848 to his death in 1860. Formally invested in 1848, his rule benefited a kingdom that had suffered from several centuries of royal dissent and decline. His politics focused on sustained national unity and identity and the minimization of foreign interference. He issued the first substantial revision of the legal codex in centuries, and he encouraged and supervised religious and cultural reforms. Confronted with increasing Rattanakosin Kingdom, Siamese and Nguyễn dynasty, Vietnamese encroachment, he attempted to establish an alliance with French colonial empire, colonial France on a sovereign basis. Yoke
A yoke is a wooden beam used between a pair of oxen or other animals to enable them to pull together on a load when working in pairs, as oxen usually do; some yokes are fitted to individual animals. ''Oknha'' (, ) is a Khmer honorific. It has different meanings depending on the period it was used. Linguistics The word means "nobleman" or "lord". The translation of "''Oknha''" is not unanimous. Leaning on the meaning of Vietnamese title "''Quốc công''", some have translated the title of ''oknha'' as "Duke" while some others favour the more mercantile version of Business magnate, tycoon. Ang Non II
Ang Non II (1739 – August 1779) was King of Cambodia from 1775 to his death in 1779. He reigned under the name of Reameathiptei III. Ang Non grew up in a Cambodian kingdom that was often under the control of either the Vietnamese or the Siamese. During his childhood, Cambodia was ruled by Thommo Reachea III (1736–1747) who held his position with the support of the Siamese. In 1749, during civil unrest, Satha II attempted to take the throne with the help of the Vietnamese. Shortly thereafter, Satha fled to Vietnam where he died in Saigon. For 24 of the next 26 years, Cambodia was ruled by two monarchs, Chey Chettha V (1749–1755) and Outey II (1758–1775) who allied with the Vietnamese. During his rule, Outey II diminished his support for King Taksin of Siam. After provocations, Taksin and the Siamese invaded Cambodia and burned down Phnom Penh. Outey II
Outey II (; 1740–1777) was king of Cambodia from 1758 to 1775. He reigned under the name of Outeyreachea II, Reameathipadei IV or Neareayreachea II. Outey was the oldest son of Prince Outeyreachea (1707–1753) and Princess Peou, a daughter of King Ang Em, which made him heir to both rival branches of the Varman dynasty, since Outey's grandfather was King Ang Tong, who had ruled Cambodia. When Outey was born in 1740, one year after the Vietnamese were expelled by the Siamese army, Chey Chettha's son King Thommo Reachea was ruling Cambodia for the third time in his life, until he died in 1747. Thommo Reachea son and heir was murdered by a brother, the ministers chose a third brother as King, Ang Tong in 1748, but after being attacked by his relative Satha and a Vietnamese army, he fled to Siam. Oudong (; also romanized as Udong or Odong) is a former town of the post-Angkorian period (1618–1863) situated in present-day ''Phsar Daek'' Commune, Kampong Speu Province, Cambodia, near the border between Kandal Province and Kampong Chhnang Province. Hà Tiên is a Provincial city (Vietnam), provincial city in Kiên Giang Province, Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Its area is and the population as of 2019 is 81,576. The city borders Cambodia to the west.
