Kaikorai Valley
Kaikorai Valley is a long broad valley which runs through the west of the New Zealand city of Dunedin, to the west of the city centre. It is the valley of a small stream, the Kaikorai Stream, which runs from northeast to southwest down the length of the valley. The valley provides a route into central Dunedin (Kaikorai Valley Road) which avoids the steep climb and descent over Lookout Point into Caversham, instead allowing for a gradual climb to the top of Stuart Street at Roslyn before a steep drop into the heart of the city. The valley contains several suburbs, largely isolated from the city centre by the ridge which forms the valley's eastern edge. This ridge was part of the crater wall of the long-extinct Dunedin Volcano. The valley is largely occupied by light industrial and wholesale businesses. Kaikorai Stream
The Kaikorai Stream is a short river which runs through the city of Dunedin, in New Zealand's South Island. The stream has origins in the northwestern suburbs of Dunedin, flowing southwest towards the Kaikorai Lagoon. Originally named Kaikarae by Ngāi Tahu Māori people, Māori referencing an event where the stream was a place where petrels were caught and eaten, the stream became highly modified during European settlement, and developed a reputation for poor water quality. Etymology The name 'Kaikorai' is a corruption of 'kai karae', Māori language, Māori for 'eating petrels', referring to a Māori explorer whose party is said to have eaten these seabirds while camping at the mouth of the stream. Kaikorai Valley College
Kaikorai Valley College is a medium-sized co-educational secondary school in Dunedin, New Zealand. Initially starting as Kaikorai Valley High School in 1958, the school combined with Kenmure Intermediate School in 1996 to become Kaikorai Valley College. The school caters for students in years 7 to 13. It celebrated its 50th jubilee in 2008. The college has approximately 65 international students, and has sister school relationships with Sakuragaoka High School, Kun-ei Girls High School and Myojo Gakuen in Japan; Po Leung Kuk Ngan Po Ling College in Hong Kong; and Harbin Number 13 Middle School in China. Facilities include its own theatre and dance studio. Halfway Bush
Halfway Bush is a suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is located to the northwest of the city centre, close to the point at which Taieri Road becomes the winding rural Three Mile Hill Road. It was this road which gave the suburb its name, as this locality was halfway between the Taieri Plains and central Dunedin in the early days of European settlement, when Three Mile Hill was the main route from Dunedin to the Otago hinterland. This route was superseded by the route through the Caversham Valley in the 1860s. Halfway Bush is the most inland of the suburbs which comprise Dunedin's main urban area, and is at an altitude of . Balaclava, New Zealand
Maryhill is a residential suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. It is located on a ridge to the southwest of the central city between the suburbs of Mornington, Kenmure, and Caversham. The smaller suburb of Balaclava lies immediately to its west. Maryhill is believed to take its name from a district in the city of Glasgow in Scotland, where many of the early settlers of the suburb originated. In this regard it is unusual among Dunedin suburbs, many of which are named for suburbs of Edinburgh - Maryhill and the nearby Little Paisley are the only suburbs named for Glaswegian locations, and the latter is an old name rarely used today. Mornington, Dunedin
Mornington is a suburb of the city of Dunedin, in the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated on hilly slopes to the west of the city centre, the slopes forming part of a ridge which surrounds the heart of the city. According to the 2013 New Zealand census, Mornington has a population of 3,267, a decrease of 126 people since the 2006 census. There were 1,518 males and 1,749 females. The use of the name Mornington for the area was first recorded in 1862. There seems to be some conjecture about the origin of the name – some sources record it as being purely descriptive, with the suburb receiving the first rays of the sunrise. There is some likelihood, however, that it was named by early landholder David Mailer after Mornington, Victoria. City Rise is an inner suburb of the New Zealand city of Dunedin. One of the city's older suburbs, it is, as its name suggests, centred on the slopes which lie close to the city centre, particularly those closest to the city's original heart of The Exchange (for this reason, places are said to be ''on the City Rise'' rather than ''in City Rise''). Extensive views across the central city can be gained from much of City Rise. Ellis Park, Dunedin
Ellis Park is a sports ground in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. The park is the home of Roslyn-Wakari association football club and Ellis Park Softball Club. Ellis Park is located in the suburb of Kaikorai, near the top of the valley of the Kaikorai Stream. A tributary of the stream, Frasers Stream, runs along the northwestern perimeter of the park.
