James Marwick
James Marwick (1862–1936) was a Scottish American and an original founder of an accounting office that became one of the Big Four accounting firms, KPMG. Career Marwick was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1862. Marwick's father was Sir James David Marwick, an Orcadian who was Town Clerk of Glasgow from 1873 to 1904. The young Marwick qualified as a chartered accountant, and began his accounting practice in Glasgow, and travelled to Australia to conduct a bank examination for a group of Scottish investors during the Australian banking crisis of 1893. Marwick later travelled from Australia to Canada and, impressed with business opportunities in North America and cultivating banking clients, he went to the United States in 1894 and began looking for a partner. William Barclay Peat
Sir William Barclay Peat (15 February 1852 – 24 January 1936) was an accountant and one of the founders of KPMG. Career Peat born in Forebank, St Cyrus, Kincardine, Fife, Kincardine, Scotland. He was the second son of James Peat and Margaret Barclay (of the banking family that built Barclays, one of England's largest banks). Peat studied at Montrose Academy in Scotland, and was then apprenticed to a local solicitor but he did not enter the legal profession. Instead, he moved to London in 1870 and was hired as a junior accounting clerk for a London firm, becoming a partner in 1876. Peat became senior partner of the firm, which was renamed William Barclay Peat & Company, in 1891. He was knighted in 1912. The senior partner of the firm was selected from the Peat family for some 75 years. Peat died in 1936. Reinhard Goerdeler
Reinhard Goerdeler (26 May 1922 – 3 January 1996) was a German accountant who was instrumental in founding KPMG, the leading international firm of accountants. Career Goerdeler was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (today Kaliningrad) as the son of Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, a leading anti-Nazi activist and mayor of the city of Leipzig. While his father was on trial at the Volksgerichtshof after the 20 July plot, Goerdeler and his family were imprisoned by the Nazis at the Dachau concentration camp and in late April 1945 transferred to Tyrol together with about 140 other prominent inmates, where the SS left the prisoners behind. He was liberated by the Fifth U.S. Army on May 5, 1945. After leaving full-time education, Goerdeler joined Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft (DTG) and worked his way up to the position of chairman, in which role he sought to expand the firm into an international network which could service his largest clients.
