A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as '' Izzy'' for Isabel or '' Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. In linguistics, the term can be used more specifically to refer to the morphological process by which the standard form of the word is transformed into a form denoting affection, or to words resulting from this process. Jurek Becker
Jurek Becker (, probably 30 September 1937 – 14 March 1997) was a Polish-born German writer, screenwriter and East German dissident. His most famous novel is '' Jacob the Liar'', which has been made into two films. He lived in Łódź during World War II for about two years and survived the Holocaust. Childhood Jurek Becker was born, probably, in 1937. His birth date is not entirely clear because his father gave a birth date that was intended to protect the child from deportation. After the war Becker was claimed by a father, but Jurek was never sure if he was his real father, and who said he no longer remembered Jurek's correct birth date. It is probable that Jurek Becker was some years younger than is generally reckoned. He lived in the Łódź Ghetto as a child. When he was five, he was sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and later to Sachsenhausen. Jerzy "Jurek" Dybał (born 22 June 1977) is a Polish conductor and soloist double-bass. Since 2013, he is the director of the International Krzysztof Penderecki Festival in Zabrze, Poland. Since 2014, he is the director of orchestra at Sinfonietta Cracovia in Kraków. Career Jurek Dybał has been conductor, soloist, recitalist and chamber musician as well as being Associate Principal double-bass in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Following in the footsteps of such prominent double bassists/conductors as Bottesini, Koussevitzky and Zubin Mehta, Dybał is founder and chief conductor of the " aderewski Chamber Orchestra. Jurek Martin OBE (born 1942) is a British-born journalist. Martin, a ''Financial Times'' columnist and former foreign editor and twice Washington, D.C. bureau chief was noted for his weekly "Letter to America" column before becoming a columnist for FT.com and a contributor to the newspaper. Martin was born in England in 1942 and educated at the Royal Grammar School Worcester and Hertford College, Oxford. After three years teaching and writing in California, he joined the ''Financial Times'' in London before moving to America. Jurek Wajdowicz (born April 26, 1951, Cracow) is a Polish-born American artist, graphic designer, fine art contemporary photographer and art director. He lives and works in New York City. Wajdowicz concentrates on images of poverty, famine, social inequality and violence in his typographic designs to more tranquil contemplative images in his art photography. From 2009, Wajdowicz has focused on fine art abstract photography resulting in several ongoing thematic series. His book, ''Liminal Spaces'' was published in 2013.
