John McClure (admiral)
Admiral John McClure (13 November 1837 – 18 January 1920) was a Scotsman serving in the Imperial Chinese Navy who, following the suicide of Admirals Ding Ruchang and Liu Buchan, took command of the Beiyang Fleet during the Battle of Weihaiwei and surrendered it to the Japanese. Biography McClure was born the son of John and Margaret McClure. His father was the architect on the Earl of Galloway's estates in Wigtownshire and at the time of John's birth was supervising the building of the parish church in Kirkcudbright. Career in China After an education at nearby Sorbie he joined the Merchant Marine. He was employed by the Taku Tug & Lighter Company, as a sailor based in Tianjin, China, and later for many years was a ship's captain for Hong Kong-based Jardine, Mattheson, and Co. and so knew the coasts of China well. John McClure (judge)
John McClure (died 1915), nicknamed Poker Jack, was a politician and judge in Arkansas during Reconstruction. He was originally a lawyer from Ohio. McClure was part of Powell Clayton's inner circle. A Republican carpetbagger, he arrived in the capital city of Little Rock as the Lieutenant Colonel of an African-American regiment in the United States Army. Dismissed from the Army for playing cards, he gained the nickname, "Poker Jack," from the Democrats. After the American Civil War ended, he became an agent of the Freedmens Bureau for Arkansas County in eastern Arkansas. John McClure (poet)
John Peebles McClure (December 19, 1893 – February 8, 1956) was an American poet and one of the founding editors of ''The Double Dealer'' literary magazine. Early life John Peebles McClure was born in Ardmore, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (located in Oklahoma) to John Alexander and Mary Elizabeth Peebles McClure. His mother died in 1896 and the family moved several times, finally settling in Chickasha around 1901. John attended both public and private schools before entering the University of Oklahoma in 1911. After getting his B.A. in 1915, he worked at the university library. During World War I he served in the U.S. Army cavalry and in the field artillery. After the war, he married librarian Grace Binford Smith (1918). John Taylor McClure (June 28, 1929 – June 17, 2014) was an American recording engineer and record producer, who worked in the fields of classical music, jazz, and popular music. Biography McClure was born on June 28, 1929, in Rahway, New Jersey, United States. He had one brother. He grew up in nearby Colonia, New Jersey and learned to play the piano by ear. He later claimed that he never was very good at reading musical scores. He studied at Oberlin College and at New York University, but did not graduate. After working in a number of other jobs, he obtained a junior position with the Carnegie Hall Recording Company in 1950. He was soon employed as a recording engineer for Columbia Records and by the late 1950s became a producer. From the early 1970s, he operated in a freelance capacity. Sir John William Maclure, 1st Baronet
Sir John William Maclure, 1st Baronet (22 April 1835 – 28 January 1901), was a British businessman and Conservative politician. Biography Maclure was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Brasenose College, Oxford, but left university without taking a degree due to ill health. He later became manager of the Guardian Insurance Company and was also Secretary of the Cotton Famine Relief Fund during the Lancashire Cotton famine in the early 1860s. He played an important role for the revival of Conservatism in Manchester and served as President of the Conservative Association of South and East Lancashire. In the 1885 general election he unsuccessfully contested Stretford, but was successfully returned for the same constituency in the 1886 general election, and held the seat until his death.
