John Dempsey (footballer, Born 1946)
John Dempsey (born 15 March 1946) is a former footballer who played from the 1960s to the 1980s as a defender. Career Starting his career with Fulham, making his debut in 1963 and 149 appearances over six years, Dempsey was signed for West London rivals Chelsea by Dave Sexton in January 1969 for £70,000. He made his Chelsea debut against Southampton in February that year and established himself in the side for the remainder of the 1968-69 season. Dempsey featured in the successful Chelsea side of the early 1970s, winning the FA Cup with the club in 1970, playing in both fiercely contested final matches against Leeds United as his side eventually ran out 2-1 winners. A year later, the Cup Winners' Cup was added with a win against Real Madrid in another replay in Athens, in which Dempsey scored the opening goal with a powerful volley following a corner (one of only five goals he scored for the club) as Chelsea won 2-1. John Dempsey is an American theatrical lyricist and playwright who has worked in United Kingdom, Britain and the United States. His work has been produced in Japan, Brazil and other countries. Much of his work in musical theater has been written with composer Dana P. Rowe. With Rowe, he wrote the book and lyrics for ''Zombie Prom'' (1995), ''The Fix (musical), The Fix'' (directed by Sam Mendes, 1997), and the stage adaptation of John Updike's ''The Witches of Eastwick (musical), The Witches of Eastwick'' (2000). Rowe and Dempsey were nominated for the Olivier Award for ''The Fix'' and ''The Witches of Eastwick'', both of which were produced in London by Cameron Mackintosh. John Dempsey (–1884), was an Irish-born American military officer, who served as a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Biography Born in 1848 in Ireland, Dempsey immigrated to the United States and joined the U.S. Navy from Massachusetts. By January 23, 1875, he was serving as a seaman on the . On that day, while ''Kearsarge'' was at Shanghai, China, he jumped overboard and rescued a shipmate from drowning. For this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Dempsey's official Medal of Honor citation reads: On board the U.S.S. ''Kearsarge'' at Shanghai, China, 23 January 1875. Displaying gallant conduct, Dempsey jumped overboard from the ''Kearsarge'' and rescued from drowning one of the crew of that vessel.He died on September 14, 1884, in San Francisco. John Church Dempsey
John Church Dempsey (1802–1877) was an English artist specialising in portraiture. He operated a stationery shop in Bristol, but in 1845 he was declared bankrupt and his effects were seized. After this he became Vagrancy (people), semi-itinerant, travelling as far afield as Norwich and Durham, England, Durham. He painted Portrait miniature, miniatures and Silhouette, silhouette portraits primarily, as well as the occasional full canvas. In later life (after 1850) he took up photography. Possible because of his vagrant lifestyle, Dempsey primarily depicted beggars, buskers and other itinerant persons in his works, although he took commissions from the wealthy as well, painting the Lord Mayor of London as well as members of the Liverpool Stock Exchange. His works are of interest to historians as they document the rise of the "urban proletariat" in Britain. Further reading * References
