John Craufurd (British Army Officer)
John Craufurd (c.1725–1764 ) was a British Army officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1761 and 1764. Early life Craufurd was the seventh son of Patrick Craufurd of Drumsoy. He joined the army as an Ensign in the 13th Foot in 1738. He became captain in 1743, major in 1747 and lieutenant-colonel in 1749 serving under General Pulteney. Military career In 1759 Craufurd was chosen to be colonel of the 85th Regiment of Foot raised by Lord Bath, for Lord Pulteney the son of General Pulteney. He was Colonel of the Regiment from 1759 to 1763. In 1759, he undertook a recruiting tour for the Regiment in the North of England. He reported on the progress of the tour setting out for York "where I shall meet Lord Northumberland, and some others who are zealous to serve the infant corps. House Of Commons
The House of Commons is the name for the elected lower house of the bicameral parliaments of the United Kingdom and Canada. In both of these countries, the Commons holds much more legislative power than the nominally upper house of parliament. The leader of the majority party in the House of Commons by convention becomes the prime minister. Other parliaments have also had a lower house called a "House of Commons". History and naming The House of Commons of the Kingdom of England evolved from an undivided parliament to serve as the voice of the tax-paying subjects of the counties and of the boroughs. Knights of the shire, elected from each county, were usually landowners, while the borough members were often from the merchant classes. These members represented subjects of the Crown who were not Lords Temporal or Spiritual, who themselves sat in the House of Lords. John Guise (1682 or 1683 – 12 June 1765) was a British Army officer and art collector. Art collector He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford from 1702 to which he later bequeathed his large collection of over 200 paintings and almost 2,000 drawings by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael - one such work is Annibale Carracci's '' Madonna and Child in Glory over the City of Bologna''. Since 1968 they have been housed in the Christ Church Picture Gallery. John Hussey Delaval, 1st Baron Delaval (17 March 1728 – 17 May 1808), known as Sir John Delaval, Bt, between 1761 and 1783, was an English landowner and politician. Background and education Delaval was the son of Francis Blake Delaval, who inherited estates at Ford Castle, Northumberland from his mother Mary, née Blake, and at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland from his uncle Admiral George Delaval (1660–1723). John's mother was Rhoda Apreece, through whom John inherited Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Pembroke College, Cambridge. Delaval bought his father's estates from his elder brother Sir Francis Blake Delaval (1727–1771) in exchange for an annuity, and developed the farming resources at Ford and the coal and mineral resources at Seaton. Thomas Watson (Berwick-upon-Tweed MP)
Thomas Watson (ca. 1701 – 7 January 1766) of Grindon Bridge, Northumberland, was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1740 to 1765. Watson was the son of Thomas Watson of Berwick and his wife Margaret Clerk. He married Barbara Forster. He was an influential member of the corporation of Berwick and was Mayor of Berwick in 1727, 1729, 1732, 1734, 1736 and 1739. In 1732 he was appointed commissary of musters in south Britain. Watson was returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for Berwick-upon-Tweed at a by-election on 27 November 1740. He voted regularly with the Government and in 1741 was appointed deputy commissary for Danish and Hessian troops in British pay. Major-General John Barrington (c. 1722 – 2 April 1764) was an officer of the British Army, the third son of John Barrington, 1st Viscount Barrington. Early life He was the second son of John Barrington, 1st Viscount Barrington and Anne (née Daines) Barrington (a daughter and co-heiress of Sir William Daines MP, Mayor of Bristol). Among his siblings was older brother William, who served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer and became the 2nd Viscount Barrington upon their father's death in 1734. His younger brothers included Daines Barrington, a lawyer, antiquarian and naturalist; Rear-Admiral Samuel Barrington of the Royal Navy; and Shute Barrington who became Bishop of Salisbury and Bishop of Durham.
