James Jewell (politician)
James Robert Jewell (15 October 1869 – 14 May 1949) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1910 to 1949, representing the electorate of Brunswick. He was the party whip from 1924 to 1949. Jewell railway station on the Upfield railway line was renamed in his honour. Jewell was born in Smithfield West, South Australia, the child of a miner father and schoolteacher mother. His family later moved to Melbourne. He was employed by a butcher from 1885 to 1888, was briefly a gold miner at Whittlesea, and then worked for the New Northcote Brick Company to 1891. He worked for a butchering firm from 1891 to 1894, as a steam engine driver for L. B. Coulsell from 1894 to 1895, spent two months working for a Bendigo smallgoodsman, and then worked as an agent for W. C. Angliss & Company to 1900. Jimmy Jewell (association Football)
Arthur James Jewell (1898–1952), also known as A. J. Jewell, was an English association football manager and referee who during his career coached Norwich City in 1939. Jewell was born in West Hampstead, London in 1898. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Naval Air Service and became one of the first pilots of the Royal Air Force in 1918. He refereed in the 1938 FA Cup Final as well as seventeen international matches, including a game between Austria and Egypt in the football tournament at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. During the Second World War, he served as an RAF Physical Fitness Officer. Jimmy Jewell (saxophonist)
Jimmy Jewell (born 1945) is a British session saxophonist, with notable contributions to much of Gallagher & Lyle's work, along with performances on hits including Joan Armatrading's UK top 10 hit " Love and Affection". Early career Jimmy Jewell began his career in 1962, participating in several jazz and rhythm and blues bands including Eddie Marten and the Sabres. He went professional in 1963 with the band Kris Ryan and the Questions after the band's drummer Geoff Wills recommended his inclusion. With Jewell's participation, ''Questions'' shifted genre from rock to something more soul-oriented. Owing to artistic differences with Ryan, Jewell left the band after final gigs in Germany during 1965. In 1966, Jewell moved to London, played for a while in the Freddie Mack Sound and subsequently toured Germany with Chris Andrews and the Paramounts. James Jewell (February 20, 1906 – August 5, 1975) was an American radio actor, producer and director at radio station WXYZ, Detroit, Michigan. Early life Jewell was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 20. 1906. His parents were William I Jewell (born 1873) who immigrated to the US from Canada in 1875, and Clara (born 1881 in Michigan). His grandfather had come to Canada from Ireland with a group of Welsh singers. His mother operated a grocery store in the Corktown section of Detroit. Professional career Jewell first got into radio in 1927. with a background of summer stock, vaudeville, burlesque, and even touring with a troupe of marionettes. His first professional engagement was in the Jessie Bonstelle stock theater in Detroit as a stage hand. He worked his way up to assistant treasurer, while playing bit parts, and at 21 was acting in the Paramount studios in Queens. Philip "Jimmy" Jewell (1953 – 31 October 1987) was a British rock climber and free soloist who was active during the 1970s and 1980s. Early life Jewell was born in South Wales and spent much of his childhood in Ferndale, where he climbed in the quarries above the town. He moved with his family to Birmingham, England while still a child. His father had worked in the South Wales Coalfield but moved to Birmingham in search of better employment. Climbing Jewell was a member of the Birmingham Cave and Crag Club. On first approaching the club he was taken to Llanberis by club members Graham Wales and Mick Moss. On that trip, he was taken up ''Direct'' at Dinas Mot. Eighteen months later he led ''Cenotaph Corner'' at Dinas Cromlech. On 16 April 1978 he made the first ascent of The Flytrap at Gogarth, along with Joe Brown and D. Cuthbertson. James Francis Jewell Archibald (September 22, 1871 – May 29, 1934) was an American war correspondent. He was the first man wounded in the Spanish–American War. He was embedded with German troops in World War I and was arrested when he returned to the United States. Biography He was born on September 22, 1871, in Chautauqua County, New York to Dr. Francis Albert Archibald and Martha Washington Jewell. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1888. By 1910 he was living in Washington, DC. He was detained by the British in World War I and was found to be carrying a letter from Constantin Theodor Dumba, the Austro-Hungarian Ambassador to the United States to Stephan Burián von Rajecz, the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Vienna. The letter described a plan to delay the production of American munitions by a strike action. He was charged with performing an "unneutral service" and later released.
