Jainism In Bundelkhand
Bundelkhand, a region in central India, has been an ancient center of Jainism. It covers northern part of Madhya Pradesh and southern western part of Uttar Pradesh. Bundelkhand was known as Dasharna or Jaijakabhukti in ancient times. The Betwa ( Vetravati) and Dhasan ( Dasharna) rivers flow through it. It is one of the few regions in India where Jainism has a strong presence and influence. There are many ancient tirthas in Bundelkhand region. Many of the modern scholars and monks of Jainism belong to this region. Aharji Jain Teerth
Aharji Jain Teerth is a historical pilgrimage site for Jainism located in Aharji, Madhya Pradesh, on the road from Tikamgarh to Chhatarpur. Aharji Jain Teerth Aharji Jain Teerth is famous for the miraculous 18 feet monolithic idol of Lord (Shantinath) in Kayotsarga posture. The main temple is famous for the beautiful monumental image of Lord Shatinath from the Chandella period. Aharji was a major Jain centre during the Chandella period. The inscriptions in this temple date back to 1180 CE ( V.S. 1237). It was the last major temple to be built here in the Chandella period. Several other smaller temples were built here at the same time as the main temple. Excavations have found a large number of Jain images that were installed here from 954CE to 1275 CE (VS 1011 to V.S. 1332), spanning the reigns of six Chandella rulers. Sarawagi
The Sarawagi or Saraogi or Sarawgi Jain community, meaning a Jain Śrāvaka, is also known as the Khandelwal. They originated from Khandela, a historical town in northern Rajasthan. The Sarawagi community owes its name to a strong historical association with Jainism. Also technically the term Sarawagi or shravaka is applicable to all Jains, the Khandelwal Jains is the only community that has used it extensively, although the term is sometimes also used by Jain Agrawals in Rajasthan. The Khandelwals have 84 divisions. The legendary origin of these divisions is given in a 17th-century book, "Shravakotpatti Varnanam". It mentions how the ruler Girakhandel of Khandela was planning to sacrifice one thousand Jain monks in a naramedha yajña. However, with the assistance of goddess Chakreshvari, muni Jinasena persuaded the ruler to give up violence. Kathanera
Kathanera (also known as Kathanere) is a small subgroup of Jain community in the Northern India. The community was found to have very small numbers but they owned around twelve temples in total. Terapanthi (Digambara)
Digambara Terapanth is one of the sects of Digambara Jainism, the other being the ''Bispanthi'' sect. It formed out of strong opposition to the religious domination of traditional religious leaders called ''bhattarakas'' during the 12th-16th century A.D, for the bhattarakas starting deviating from the original/Mula jain customs. They oppose the worship of various minor gods and goddesses. Some Terapanthi practices, like not using flowers in worship, gradually spread throughout most of North Indian Jainism as well. Origin The Terapanthi movement was born out of the ''Adhyatma'' movement that arose in 1626 AD ( V.S. 1683) in Agra. Its leading proponent was Banarasidas of Agra. Adhyatma groups flourished during 1644-1726 in Agra, Lahore and Multan. The poet Dyanatrai was associated with the Adhyatma movement. Golalare
Golalare (Sanskrit गोलाराडे, Hindi गोलालारे ) is a Jain community of Bhadawar and Bundelkhand region in India. Their original center is the Bhind-Etawah region on the banks of the Chambal river. Some of them have migrated to Bundelkhand region. A section of the Golalare are now known as Kharaua. Some of the bhattarakas of Balatkara Gana who had a seat at Ater, and Rura, were born in this same community. Golapurva is an ancient Jain community from the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. History Jainism had a continuous presence in the Bundelkhand region since antiquity. Jainism was flourishing during the Gupta period at Vidisha region. The Durjanpur idols installed during the rule of Ramagupta date to about 365 AD. The Udaigiri cave Parshvanath inscription mentioning the lineage of Bhadranvaya is dated to 425 AD. The great Shantinath temple at Deogarh was built before 862 CE, suggesting existence of a prosperous Jain community in this region. A number of Chandella-period inscriptions mentioning the Golapurva community have been found. Parwar (Jain)
Parwar, also spelt as Paravāra (परवार in Hindi, पौरपट्ट in Sanskrit inscriptions), is a major Jain community from the Bundelkhand region, which is largely in Madhya Pradesh, but also includes the two districts of Lalitpur and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from them, Nagpur district (Maharashtra) have also a very large Parwar community. There is an area in Itwari of Nagpur known as Parwar-Pura having large number of Parwar's homes and shops . Most of the Nagpur's Parwar are migrated from Sagar, Deori, and other small villages of Sagar District of MP. Parwar exclusively follow the Digambar Jain tradition. Parwar usually preferred their marriage within community. There are 12 Gotra in Parwar community. Each Gotra has 12 Moor (lineages). A marriage within the same gotra or lineage are not allowed. Pateriaji
Pateriya Ji, ( hi, पटेरिया जी) is a jain temple site in Madhya Pradesh, India, on the outskirts of Garhakota in Sagar district. This is an atishaya kshetra ("miraculous holy place") History This Jain temple is more than 200 Years old, built by the family of Shah Mohandas, of Golapurva Banonya clan, out of their one-day earning from the cotton trade in 1782 A.D. (V.S. 1839). The inscriptions of the three Parshvanath statues are there in first vedi . The principal deity of Pateriya is Lord Parsvanath (The 23rd Teerthankar). The three idols are 7 feet in height in Padmasana posture build in Black Stone with three serpent hoods. The spire of this temple is 90 feet high surrounded by a thick wall. Badagaon Dhasan is a town and a Nagar Parishad (City Council) in Tikamgarh district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Demographics India census, Badagaon had a population of 18,584. Nainagiri
Nainagiri is a major pilgrimage site for Jainism in India. It is located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, it is 12 km from Dalpatpur and 25 km from Bukswaha. This tirth, also known as Reshandigiri, is a Siddha Kshetra where five ancient saints including Varadatta had attained nirvana.
