Jānis Timma
Jānis Timma (2 July 1992 – 17 December 2024) was a Latvian professional basketball player. Standing at , he mainly played at the small forward position. He also represented the senior Latvia men's national basketball team, Latvia national team. A native of Krāslava, Timma started his career in 2008 with ASK Riga and had stints with several EuroLeague teams, including BC Khimki, Khimki Moscow, Saski Baskonia, Baskonia and Olympiacos B.C., Olympiacos. In his youth, he was regarded as one of the top prospects of his generation in Europe. Professional career Timma grew up playing basketball in his hometown of Krāslava, but at age 15 moved to Rīga. At first he joined ASK Riga, ASK Rīga's youth system, and made a few appearances for its senior team, during the end of the 2008–09 season. Club Deportivo Saski-Baskonia, Sociedad Anónima Deportiva, S.A.D commonly known as Saski Baskonia () and also simply as Baskonia, is a professional basketball team based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Obradoiro Clube de Amigos do Baloncesto, S.A.D. (lit, Obradoiro Friends of Basketball Club), also known as Monbus Obradoiro for sponsorship reasons, is a professional basketball team based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. They currently compete in the LEB Gold. History Obradoiro CAB was founded in 1970 and started playing in the third division after acquiring the spot of the basketball section of SD Compostela. They were promoted for the first time to the Liga Nacional after finishing in the third position of the 1981–82 Primera División B. 2012–13 Baltic Basketball League
The 2012–13 Baltic Basketball League was the 9th season of the Baltic Basketball League. The Challenge Cup tournament was discontinued and the new format featured 23 teams – 9 from Lithuania, 8 from Estonia, 5 from Latvia and 1 from Kazakhstan. For the Regular season the teams were divided into three groups of six and one group of five. Top four teams of each group advanced to Last 16 where they were divided into four groups. Two best teams of each group advanced to the play-offs. All play-off games were played in home-and-away series. Ventspils became the first ever Latvian team to win the tournament by beating Lithuanian side Prienai 161–142 on aggregate score in the finals. The 2018–19 VTB United League was the 10th complete season of the VTB United League. It was also the sixth season that the league functions as the Russian domestic first tier level. It started in October 2018 with the first round of the regular season and ended in June 2019 with the last game of the finals. CSKA Moscow is the defending champion. Format changes From this season, the top eight teams qualify for the playoffs. All series are played in a best-of-five format with a 2–2–1 structure. The 2016–17 VTB United League was the 8th complete season of the VTB United League. It is also the fourth season that the league functions as the Russian basketball league system, Russian domestic first tier level. PBC CSKA Moscow, CSKA Moscow was the defending champion and successfully defended its title. This season, 13 teams participated in the league after four sides from the previous year left. Teams B.C. VITA Tbilisi, VITA Tbilisi, Bisons Loimaa, ČEZ Basketball Nymburk, ČEZ Nymburk left the league, after participating in the 2015–16 season. VTB United League
The VTB United League () is an international professional men's club basketball league that was founded in 2009. It is made up of mostly Russian clubs, along with one each from Belarus and Kazakhstan. Since 2013, it is the first tier of Russian professional club basketball. Therefore, the highest placed Russian team in the league can also be named the Russian national champions. The league is sponsored by Russian state-owned VTB Bank. In 2009 CSKA Moscow won VTB United League Promo-Cup, but this competition does not count as official VTB title. CSKA has dominated the league, having won majority of titles its existence. The 2015–16 VTB United League was the seventh complete season of the VTB United League. It was also the third season that the league functioned as the Russian domestic first tier level. CSKA Moscow was the defending champion, and the team successfully defended its title. Teams Krasnye Krylia withdrew from the league as the Samara Sports Palace was not adequate for the VTB United League (such as a minimum requirement of 3,000 seats). It planned to reapply for the 2016–17 season after renovations. In its place, Georgian Superliga side VITA Tbilisi was chosen in July 2015, the first side from that country to play in the league. The VTB United League Top Player is an annual VTB United League award that is given to one player from each country that is represented by the league's clubs. The award has been handed out since the 2012–13 season, and it is awarded by the player's citizenship, regardless of the player's club's location.
