Judo At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's 48 Kg
The women's 48 kg competition in Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held on 6 August at the Carioca Arena 2. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals. Quarterfinal losers competed in a repechage match for the right to face a semifinal loser for a bronze medal (that is, the judokas defeated in quarterfinals A and B competed against each other, with the winner of that match facing the semifinal loser from the other half of the bracket). The medals for the competition were presented by Yumilka Ruiz, Cuba, member of the International Olympic Committee and the gifts were presented by Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation. Carioca Arena 2
Carioca Arena 2 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 2'') is a technical education institution and indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue hosted judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, judo and wrestling at the 2016 Summer Olympics as well as boccia at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. As with a number of other venues in the Barra Olympic Park, Carioca Arena 2 was transformed after the games to become part of the Olympic Training Center (Rio de Janeiro), Olympic Training Centre. The arena has since been converted into a branch of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology. It serves 1400 students. Sarah Gabrielle Cabral de Menezes (born 26 March 1990) is a judoka from Brazil. In 2012, she became the first Brazilian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in judo, after defeating the reigning Olympic champion Alina Dumitru. She also competed at the 2008 and 2016 Summer Olympics. Menezes won her first major medal by claiming bronze at the World Judo Championships in Tokyo in September 2010. Menezes retired in 2020, as she got pregnant from French judoka Loic Pietri, and their daughter was born in May 2021. In 2021, she was approached by the Brazilian Judo Confederation to coach the national team. In the 2024 Summer Olympics, Menezes coached Larissa Pimenta to a bronze medal and Beatriz Souza Beatriz Rodrigues de Souza (; born 20 May 1998) is a Brazilian judoka. Shira Rishony
Shira Rishony (; born 21 February 1991) is an Israeli Olympic lightweight judoka. She competes at 48 kg (under 106 pounds). She competed for Israel at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2020 Summer Olympics she won a bronze medal in the mixed team event, and placed 5th in the women's 48 kg event. She won a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships. Rishony represented Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in judo; in the women's 48 kg she came in 17th, and in the mixed team event Team Israel came in ninth. Maryna Mikolaevna Cherniak (, born 26 March 1988) is a Ukrainian judoka. Career Her twin sister Inna Cherniak is visually impaired, but competes in judo and sambo both against sighted and visually impaired people. Charline Van Snick (born 2 September 1990 in Liège) is a Belgian retired judoka who won bronze in the women's 48 kg judo at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
