Judo At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's 73 Kg
The men's 73 kg competition in Judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held on 8 August at the Carioca Arena 2. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals. Quarterfinal losers competed in a repechage match for the right to face a semifinal loser for a bronze medal (that is, the judokas defeated in quarterfinals A and B competed against each other, with the winner of that match facing the semifinal loser from the other half of the bracket). The medals for the competition were presented by Alex Gilady, Israel, member of the International Olympic Committee and the gifts were presented by Haruki Uemura, International Judo Federation executive committee member. Carioca Arena 2
Carioca Arena 2 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 2'') is a technical education institution and indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue hosted judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, judo and wrestling at the 2016 Summer Olympics as well as boccia at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. As with a number of other venues in the Barra Olympic Park, Carioca Arena 2 was transformed after the games to become part of the Olympic Training Center (Rio de Janeiro), Olympic Training Centre. The arena has since been converted into a branch of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology. It serves 1400 students. Nicholas Delpopolo (born February 8, 1989) is an American judoka. He competed in the men's 73 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics; after defeating Cheung Chi Yip in the second round and Dirk Van Tichelt in the third, he lost to Wang Ki-Chun in the fourth round and was eliminated by Nyam-Ochir Sainjargal in the repechages. On August 6, 2012, Delpopolo was expelled from the Olympics by the IOC after he tested positive for cannabis. Upon exiting the games, Delpopolo stated the positive test result was caused by "inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana, before I left for the Olympic Games."
