José Coby Frey Chávez y Chávez (1851–1924) was a Mexican-American outlaw from the New Mexican Territory, which is now the state of New Mexico, in the United States. He was said to be the son of a Spanish father and Apache mother. Chávez became an outlaw at a relatively young age when he joined the Lincoln County Regulators. Early life José Chávez y Chávez was born in 1851 in Ceboleta, New Mexico. Little is known about his childhood. He briefly worked as a laborer, but discovered that honest labor was difficult. He gradually drifted from petty theft to cattle rustling. Lincoln County Wars Chávez joined the Regulators in his twenties, having already committed a number of small robberies and other crimes, and would prove useful to Billy the Kid's gang. Outlaw
An outlaw, in its original and legal meaning, is a person declared as outside the protection of the law. In pre-modern societies, all legal protection was withdrawn from the criminal, so anyone was legally empowered to persecute or kill them. Outlawry was thus one of the harshest penalties in the legal system. In Germanic law, early Germanic law, the death penalty is conspicuously absent, and outlawing is the most extreme punishment, presumably amounting to a death sentence in practice. Las Gorras Blancas
Las Gorras Blancas (Spanish for "The White Caps") was an clandestine organization active in New Mexico Territory in the late 1880s and early 1890s. Often characterized as vigilantes and in response to the Santa Fe Ring of land speculators, ranchers, and homesteaders, mostly Anglo-Americans, Las Gorras Blancas protested the takeover of former common lands of Hispanic residents by acts of vandalism such as cutting fences and burning houses and barns. The night-riding members wore white caps to disguise themselves. The reputed founders and leaders were the three Herrera brothers: Juan Jose, Pablo, and Nicanor. The organization claimed to have 1,500 members. Las Gorras Blancas were popular among the residents, mostly Hispanic, of Las Vegas and San Miguel County. A duel is an arranged engagement in combat between two people with matched weapons. During the 17th and 18th centuries (and earlier), duels were mostly single combats fought with swords (the rapier and later the small sword), but beginning in the late 18th century in England, duels were more commonly fought using pistols. Robert Newton Ford (December 8, 1861 – June 8, 1892) was an American outlaw who killed fellow outlaw Jesse James on April 3, 1882.
