Josefa Sánchez De González
Josefa Sánchez de González was a Dominican Republic teacher and politician. In 1942 she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, becoming one of the first group of Dominican Congresswomen. Biography A teacher by profession, Sánchez de González was a candidate in Santiago Province the 1942 general elections, the first after women were granted the right to vote. The Chamber of Deputies () is the lower house of the Congress of the Dominican Republic. Together, it and the Senate of the Dominican Republic, Senate comprise the legislature of the Dominican Republic. The composition and powers of the House are established by Constitution of the Dominican Republic. Santiago () is one of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic. It is divided into 10 municipalities and its capital city is Santiago de los Caballeros. The Dominican Party (, PD) was the ''de facto'' only permitted political party in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the country from 1930 to 1961. Its symbol was a palm tree. History The Dominican Party was founded on 2 August 1931, a year after Trujillo came to power. It was an outgrowth of the "Patriotic Coalition of Citizens" that supported Trujillo's run for president. Soon afterward, it was proclaimed to be the only legal party. On 16 August 1935, the HIN radio station, known as "The Voice of the Dominican Party", was opened. It was dedicated to serving as the media propagator of the activities of the Dominican Party. The Congress of the Dominican Republic () is the bicameral legislature of the government of the Dominican Republic, consisting of two houses, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Both senators and deputies are chosen through direct election. There are no term limits for either chamber. As provided by the Dominican Constitution, each of the 178 members of the Chamber of Deputies represents a district and serves a four-year term. Chamber seats are apportioned among the states by population. The 32 Senators serve staggered four-year terms. Each province has one senator, regardless of population.
