John O'Farrell (politician)
John O'Farrell (December 4, 1826 – November 11, 1892) was a lawyer and political figure in Canada East. He represented Lotbinière in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1854 to 1858. His surname also appears as Farrall. He was born in Quebec City Quebec City is the capital city of the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Quebec. O'Farrell articled in law, was called to the bar in 1850 and set up practice in Quebec City. In 1853, he married Maria Louisa Nowlan. He was expelled from the assembly in May 1858 and his election was overturned; he did not run for reelection in the by-election held later that year. O'Farrell ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 1872 and 1874. He died in Quebec City at the age of 65. Referenc ... Canada East
Canada East () was the northeastern portion of the Province of Canada. Lord Durham's Report investigating the causes of the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions recommended merging those two colonies. The new colony, known as the Province of Canada, was created by the Act of Union 1840 passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, having effect in 1841. For administrative purposes, the new Province was subdivided into Canada West and Canada East. The former name of "Lower Canada" came back into official use in 1849, and as of Canadian Confederation of 1867 it formed the newly created province of Quebec. Lotbinière (federal Electoral District)
Lotbinière (; later known as Lotbinière—L'Érable) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 2004. It was created by the British North America Act 1867. It was renamed "Lotbinière—L'Érable" in 2000, and was abolished in 2003 when it was redistributed between Lotbinière—Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, Mégantic—L'Érable, Richelieu and Richmond—Arthabaska ridings. Geography It consisted initially of the County of Lotbinière. In 1876, the Parish of St. Sévérin was transferred to the County of Beauce for the purposes of representation in the House of Commons. In 1924, it was defined again as consisting of the County of Lotbinière. Legislative Assembly Of The Province Of Canada
The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the lower house of the Parliament of the Province of Canada. The Province of Canada consisted of the former province of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East (now Quebec), and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West (now Ontario). It was created by the Act of Union 1840. Canada East and Canada West each elected 42 members to the assembly for the first four parliaments. In 1853, following the 1851 Canadian census, the number of seats in the assembly was increased by the 4th Parliament of the Province of Canada from 84 to 130, 65 for each section, even though Canada West had a slightly larger population.
