John Mohun, 1st Baron Mohun Of Okehampton
John Mohun, 1st Baron Mohun of Okehampton (1595 – 28 March 1641) was an English politician. Life He was the eldest son of Sir Reginald Mohun, 1st Baronet, and was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, graduating in 1608, and joining the Middle Temple. In the Parliaments of 1624–25 and 1625, he sat as MP for the Cornish borough of Grampound; he was a follower of the Duke of Buckingham, and it was probably through Buckingham's influence that he was appointed Vice-Warden of the Stannaries in 1620. During 1626 and 1627, he was a member of a number of several commissions in the South-West, including one which inquired into the conduct of Sir John Eliot as Vice Admiral of Devon. At the election for the Parliament of 1628, Buckingham and his agent in the South-West, Sir James Bagg, were anxious to prevent Eliot and another of the most effective opponents of the Crown, William Coryton, from being elected Members for Cornwall. Sir Reginald Mohun, 1st Baronet
Sir Reginald Mohun, 1st Baronet (1564 – 26 December 1639) of Boconnoc in Cornwall, was a prominent member of the gentry of Cornwall and an MP. Origins He was the eldest son and heir of Sir William Mohun (d. 1587) of Boconnoc, Sheriff of Cornwall in 1572, by his first wife Elizabeth Horsey, daughter and heiress of John Horsey.Vivian, 1887, p. 325 He was descended from the ancient Mohun family, feudal barons of Dunster in Somerset, seated at Dunster Castle. Career He was the Member of Parliament for Fowey in 1584 and 1586 and for East Looe in 1614. He was also elected in a double return in 1625 when four names were submitted, which was not knowingly resolved by Parliament. He was selected Sheriff of Cornwall for 1592–93 and made a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall in 1600. He was knighted in 1599 and created a baronet on 25 November 1612. Sir Roger Aston (died 23 May 1612) of Cranford, Middlesex, was an English courtier and favourite of James VI of Scotland. Biography Aston was the illegitimate son of Thomas Aston (died 1553), Thomas Aston (died 1553). Scottish sources spell his name variously as "Aschetone", "Aschetoun", or "Aschingtoun". After serving the Regent Lennox, Earl of Lennox, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, Lord Darnley, and Mary, Queen of Scots, Aston was made a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James VI of Scotland in 1578. In England, he was Master of the Great Wardrobe to King James I in England. He held both positions until his death. Baron Mohun of Okehampton was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created on 15 April 1628 for John Mohun, formerly a Member of Parliament for Grampound, Cornwall. The family was formerly seated at Hall in the parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey in Cornwall, and was a junior branch of the Mohun family, feudal barons of Dunster, of Dunster Castle in Somerset, of whom the first member, the warrior William de Moyon (died post 1090), had come over with William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest of 1066. Thomas St Aubyn
Thomas St Aubyn (c. 1578 – 1637) was an English politician. He was the son of Thomas St Aubyn of Clowance in Cornwall and studied at Queen's College, Oxford and the Middle Temple. He was elected the MP for St Ives in the Parliament of 1601 alongside Thomas Barton and MP for Grampound in the Addled Parliament (1614). He married Katherine, the daughter of John Bonython of Carclew with whom he had two sons and a daughter. Robert Carey, 1st Earl of Monmouth (ca. 1560 – 12 April 1639) (or "Cary") was an English nobleman and courtier. He was the youngest son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, Chamberlain (office), chamberlain and first cousin of Queen Elizabeth I, and Anne Morgan, Baroness Hunsdon, Anne Morgan, daughter of Sir Thomas Morgan and Anne Whitney. Biography As a young man he accompanied several diplomatic missions abroad and took part in military expeditions. John Hampden
John Hampden (24 June 1643) was an English politician from Oxfordshire, who was killed fighting for Roundhead, Parliament in the First English Civil War. An ally of Parliamentarian leader John Pym, and a cousin of Oliver Cromwell, he was one of the Five Members whom Charles I of England tried to arrest in January 1642, a significant step in the outbreak of fighting in August. All five are commemorated at the State Opening of Parliament each year. When the war began in August 1642, Hampden raised an infantry regiment for the Parliamentarian cause. His death on 18 June 1643 after being wounded in the Battle of Chalgrove Field was considered a significant loss, largely because Hampden acted as a bridge between the different Parliamentarian factions. His early death meant Hampden avoided the ideological splits that led to the execution of Charles I in January 1649, and establishment of the Commonwealth of England.
