John Martin (businessman)
John Martin (August 18, 1820 β May 25, 1905) of Peacham, Vermont, was an American steamboat captain and businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota involved in lumber and gristmill, flour milling. In 1891, Martin led a merger of six mills to create Northwestern Consolidated Milling Company, at the time the world's second largest flour milling company after Pillsbury Company, Pillsbury-Washburn. John Martin went with his brothers during the California Gold Rush and mined successfully for one year. In 1855, in the Minnesota Territorial town of St. Anthony, John Martin was standard-bearer and leader on horseback of the ceremonial opening of the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, the first major permanent bridge across the Mississippi River. He became President of the First National Bank, he owned the largest lumber mill in the area until it burned in 1887, and he was founding officer of Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway and Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. John Martin (judge)
John Martin (1784 β October 17, 1840) was a notable judge of the Cherokee Tribal Court. He was a highly educated member of the tribe, although he was only one-eighth Cherokee. A biographer describes him as blond, blue-eyed and a person who could easily pass for white. He had no formal training in law, but he was one of the first men appointed to serve as a judge on the Cherokee Tribal Court, which was established in 1822. After his term as judge ended in 1828, he was addressed as Judge Martin for the rest of his life. He also served the Cherokee Nation as Treasurer, He was also a member of the Cherokee Constitutional Convention that led to the formation of a real national government. In 1837, he removed from Georgia to Indian Territory, where he was elected as the first Chief Justice of the newly created Cherokee Supreme Court in 1839. John Martin was first elected Whig MP for Tewkesbury at the 1832 general election but lost the seat at the next general election in 1835. However, he regained the seat in 1837 and held the seat until he stood down in 1859. Martin's family were well-known in the Tewkesbury area. John Martin (1724β1794) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1754 to 1761. Martin was the eldest son of John Martin MP banker, of Overbury Court, Worcestershire and Lombard Street and his wife Catherine Jackson, daughter of Joseph Jackson of Sneyd Park, Gloucestershire. He was not a partner in the family banking house. Martin was elected Member of Parliament for Tewkesbury after a contest at the 1754 general election. John Martin (1692β1767) was a British banker and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1741 to 1747. Martin was the third son of William Martin of Evesham, Worcestershire and his wife Elizabeth Knight, daughter of John Knight of Barrells, Warwickshire and was baptised on 8 July 1692. He bought Overbury Court in 1723 from the Parsons family and rebuilt the Elizabethan manor house in the Georgian style in 1740 after a disastrous fire. He married firstly Catherine Jackson, daughter of Joseph Jackson of Sneyd Park, Gloucestershire before 1724. He was connected with the family bank, later Martins Bank, in Lombard Street by 1731 though not yet a partner. He succeeded his younger brother James as senior partner in 1744. John Martin (fl. 1529) was an English politician. Identity It is unclear who this John Martin was, although there are several mentions of other John Martins which may relate to him. There were Martins involved in governing Berwick-upon-Tweed later in the sixteenth century, who may have been his relations. The first guild book of the town is incomplete between 1509 and 1537, leaving us little information. Not all Members of Parliament had connections to the area they represented, and it has been speculated that he was the John Martin who was baron of Leconfield, Yorkshire, and served Henry Percy, 5th Earl of Northumberland as Groom of the Chamber in October 1523. This Martin was with the Earl in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1523 and was given an annuity from a North Riding of Yorkshire manor by the Earl. Rear Admiral Alan John Ogilvie Martin, is a retired officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy, who served as Chief of Navy (New Zealand), Chief of the Navy from 30 November 2015 to 29 November 2018. Vice Admiral Sir John Edward Ludgate Martin, (10 May 1918 β 31 May 2011) was a Royal Navy officer and Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey. Naval career Martin joined the Royal Navy in 1938. He served in the Second World War, taking part in the Dunkirk evacuation when his ship, Sun Tug 15, undertook four trips to Dunkirk to pick up evacuees. He also served as a navigation officer in the Mediterranean and took part in the invasion of Sicily in 1943. Martin was appointed deputy director of Manpower Planning at the Admiralty in 1959, Senior Naval Officer in the West Indies in 1961 and Commander of British Forces in the Caribbean Area in 1962. He went on to be Captain at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in 1963, Flag Officer, Middle East in 1966 and Commander of British Forces in the Gulf in 1967. John Donelson Martin (1830β1862) was a Confederate States Army officer during the American Civil War. Early life John Martin was born on August 18, 1830, in Davidson County, Tennessee. In 1846 he volunteered for the MexicanβAmerican War, serving as a private in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Company D) until war's end in 1848. Civil War When the American Civil War erupted in 1861 Martin joined the Confederate States Army and was named Captain of the ''Hickory Rifles'', a company of infantry from Memphis and Shelby County. It soon became Company E of the 154th Senior Tennessee Infantry Regiment; Martin himself becoming the regiment's Major in May 1861. During the summer Martin raised a regiment with 7 companies from Mississippi and 3 from Tennessee.
