John Arbuthnott, 9th Viscount Of Arbuthnott
John Arbuthnott, 9th Viscount of Arbuthnott, DL, JP (4 June 1806 – 26 May 1891) was a Scottish peer and soldier. Born at Arbuthnott House, he was the oldest son of John Arbuthnott, 8th Viscount of Arbuthnott and his wife Margaret, daughter of Walter Ogilvy, de jure 8th Earl of Airlie. In 1860, he succeeded his father as viscount. Arbuthnott was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and matriculated on 28 June 1824. He was commissioned Cornet in the 6th Dragoons in 1825 and purchased the ranks of Lieutenant in 1826 and Captain in 1830. He retired as Major on half-pay in 1850. He served as deputy lieutenant for Kincardineshire. On 5 June 1837, he married his cousin Lady Jean (or Jane) Graham Drummond Ogilvy (born Midlothian 27 February 1818; died 4 March 1902), eldest daughter of David Ogilvy, 9th Earl of Airlie at Cortachy Castle, Angus. David Ogilvy, 9th Earl of Airlie (16 December 1785 – 20 August 1849) was a Scottish peer and planter. Clan Arbuthnott is a Lowland Scottish clan. History Origin of name The name Arbuthnott is of territorial origin from the lands of the same name in the county of Kincardineshire. Early documents refer to these lands as ''Aberbothenoth'' which has been translated as the ''mouth of the stream below the noble house''. Viscount Of Arbuthnott
Viscount of Arbuthnott is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1641, along with the subsidiary title Lord Inverbervie, for Sir Robert Arbuthnott. The Viscount of Arbuthnott is the hereditary chief of Clan Arbuthnott. At the time of the 16th Viscount's death in 2012, the family held the genealogical record of being one of an unbroken male line living in the same spot for more than 800 years. Around 1188, William the Lion granted ancestor Hugh de Swinton the lands of Arbuthnott, where the family estate and clan association headquarters remains to this day. All Scottish viscounts have 'of' in their titles, contrary to English viscounts who are styled simply 'Viscount X'. However, most Scottish viscounts have now adopted the English practice; only the Viscount of Arbuthnott and, to a lesser extent, the Viscount of Oxfuird, continue to use 'of'. Fordoun
Fordoun ( gd, Fordun) (Pronounced "For-Dun") is a parish and village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Fothirdun (possibly "the lower place"), as it was historically known, was an important area in the Howe of the Mearns. Fordoun and Auchenblae, together with their immediate districts form the Parish of Fordoun with the Parish Church in the vicinity of the original settlement, now absorbed by Auchenblae. In the 19th Century Fordoun railway station was opened approximately 3 miles to the South East of Fordoun Church and the original settlement. A village grew at the site of the station (opened in November 1849 and closed in June 1956), where there were also a number of shops, but only a seasonal farm shop remains. In the time since the founding of the railway station the village formerly known as Fordoun Station has come to be known simply as Fordoun and the site of the original settlement has been absorbed by Auchenblae. John Arbuthnott, 10th Viscount of Arbuthnott DL (b. Kincardineshire 20 July 1843 – d. Arbuthnott House 30 November 1895) was the son of John Arbuthnott, 9th Viscount of Arbuthnott whom he succeeded in 1891. Lt. 49th Foot Regiment. He was Deputy Lieutenant for Kincardineshire. Married Anna Harriet Allen (born London 1852/3, died at Arbuthnott House 23 April 1892) at the home of her uncle, Inchmartine House, Inchture (Errol), 20 April 1871). Cortachy Castle
Cortachy Castle is a castellated mansion House at Cortachy, Angus, Scotland, some four miles north of Kirriemuir. The present building dates from the 15th century, preceded by an earlier structure that was owned by the Earls of Strathearn. It was acquired by the Ogilvies in 1473 and substantively modified in the 17th and 19th centuries. The 1696 remodelling was by Tobias Bauchop of Alloa. In 1820 it was "romanticised", as was the fashion of the day, by the addition of crenellations, plus other alterations by R & R Dickson. Part of the building was damaged by fire in 1883 and it was extensively rebuilt in the following two years by Kinnear & Peddie. Kincardineshire, also known as the Mearns (from the Scottish Gaelic meaning "the Stewartry"), is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area on the coast of northeast Scotland. It is bounded by Aberdeenshire on the north and west, and by Angus on the south. The name "Kincardine" is also used in Kincardine and Mearns, a committee area of the Aberdeenshire Council, although this covers a smaller area than the county.
