Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe IV
Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe IV (May 21, 1946 – December 3, 2007) was an American politician and businessman. Born in Biloxi, Mississippi, O'Keefe went to Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, Mississippi. He, then, served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1967. He graduated from University of Southern Mississippi in 1970 and then went to Tulane University Law School. He was involved with the gas and oil drilling rights business in Louisiana and also was the captain of his shrimp boat. He owned a restaurant in Florida and helped write the O'Keefe family cookbook: "Cooking on the Gulf." From 1971 to 1979, O'Keefe served in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe III (July 12, 1923 – August 23, 2016) was an American fighter ace, Democratic Party politician, insurance executive, and funeral director. As a Marine pilot in World War II he received the Navy Cross for five of the seven kills he recorded over Okinawa. After the war he entered politics, serving as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1960 to 1964 and as the mayor of Biloxi, Mississippi, from 1973 to 1981. The most prominent funeral home owner in Biloxi, he won a $500 million jury award in a contractual dispute with the rival funeral home company Loewen Group, later settling for $175 million. O'Keefe was a major donor to and chief fundraiser for the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum Of Art, named after his wife Annette. His son, Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe IV, also served as a state legislator. Biloxi, Mississippi
Biloxi ( ; ) is a city in and one of two county seats of Harrison County, Mississippi, United States (the other being the adjacent city of Gulfport). The 2010 United States Census recorded the population as 44,054 and in 2019 the estimated population was 46,212. The area's first European settlers were French colonists. The city is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area and the Gulfport–Biloxi–Pascagoula, MS Combined Statistical Area. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, Biloxi was the third-largest city in Mississippi, behind Jackson and Gulfport. Due to the widespread destruction and flooding, many refugees left the city.
