Stephen Jenks (March 17, 1772 – June 3, 1856) was an Yankee tunesmith, teacher, and tunebook compiler. He was born in Glocester, Rhode Island and raised in Ellington, Connecticut. During his life he moved from town to town, living in Ridgefield and New Canaan, Connecticut, Pound Ridge, New York, and Providence, Rhode Island, finally settling in Thompson, Ohio in 1829. Between 1799 and 1810 he authored and coauthored more than ten printed collections of sacred and secular music; after moving to Ohio, he became a farmer and a maker of percussion instruments. The music Stephen Jenks' music is representative of the type of music being written at that time in rural New England America, a cappella and an interest in melodic writing. However, his music contains striking harmonic progressions, unusual dissonances and cross relations. Michael Hutchinson Jenks (May 21, 1795 – October 16, 1867) was a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Michael H. Jenks was born at Bridgetown Mills, Pennsylvania, near Middletown, Pennsylvania. He served as commissioner of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from 1830 to 1833, and treasurer from 1833 to 1835. He moved to Newtown, Pennsylvania, in 1837, and served as associate judge of the court of common pleas of Bucks County from 1838 to 1843. Jenks was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1844. Jeremiah Whipple Jenks (September 2, 1856 – August 24, 1929) was an American economist, educator, and professor at Cornell University, who held various posts in the United States government throughout his career. He served as a member of the Dillingham Immigration Commission from 1907 to 1914 in which he led research projects on the state of immigration to the US. He authored several influential works, including ''The Immigration Problem: A Study of Immigration Conditions and Needs'' and ''Dictionary of Races or Peoples''. The Jenks optimization method, also called the Jenks natural breaks classification method, is a data clustering method designed to determine the best arrangement of values into different classes. This is done by seeking to minimize each class's average deviation from the class mean, while maximizing each class's deviation from the means of the other classes.
