James Smith (footballer, Born 1844)
James Smith (summer 1844 – 20 September 1876) was a Scottish footballer who played for Scotland against England in the first official international match in 1872. He was a member of the Queen's Park and South Norwood clubs and was prominent in the early history of Queen's Park. Early life Smith was born in Aberdeen in the summer of 1844, the son of Robert Smith and Barbara Abercrombie. His father was the gardener to the Earl of Fife, who was then based at Mar Lodge on Royal Deeside. His father was later the head gardener on the Duke's estate at Innes House, near Elgin. James Smith then attended Fordyce Academy. Football career Smith was one of the founder members of the Queen's Park club, based in Glasgow. Private James Alexander Smith VC (5 January 1881 – 21 May 1968) was born in Workington, Cumberland and was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His birth name was James Alexander Glenn. He was 33 years old, and a private in the 3rd Battalion, Border Regiment, British Army, attached to the 2nd Battalion, during the First World War. Smith and Abraham Acton from Whitehaven, were both awarded their Victoria Cross (VC) for their actions on 21 December 1914 at Rouges Bancs, France. James Argyle Smith (July 1, 1831 – December 6, 1901) was a United States Army officer, and a graduate of West Point. He is known for being a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War, his works in the educational system in Mississippi, and in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. James Smith (born 1838) was a seaman serving in the United States Navy who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Smith was born in 1838 in the Kingdom of Hawaii before it became part of the United States and after immigrating to the United States he joined the navy. His navy enlistment papers state that he was a "Sandwich Islander" (Hawaiian). James Smith (c. 1826 – October 31, 1881) was a Union Navy sailor in the American Civil War and a recipient of the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Born in about 1826 in Belfast, Ireland, Smith immigrated to the United States and was living in New York when he joined the U.S. Navy. He served during the Civil War as a captain of the forecastle and gun captain on the . At the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, he "fought his gun with skill and courage" despite heavy fire. 1937 USA Outdoor Track And Field Championships
The 1937 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships were organized by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and served as the national championships in outdoor track and field for the United States. The men's edition was held at Marquette Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it took place 2–3 July. The women's meet was held separately at Trenton High School in Trenton, New Jersey, on 25 September. The men's championships marked the first time (other than the 1936 United States Olympic trials) that the meet was held over two days. In the women's competition, the 16-year-old athlete Claire Isicson, described as "unknown", won the 50 m and 100 m and finished 4th in the long jump.
