Jay Powell (baseball)
James Willard "Jay" Powell (born January 9, 1972) is an American former baseball pitcher who last played for the Atlanta Braves. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in in the 11th round, but did not sign. Following his junior year at Mississippi State, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round (19th pick overall) in and signed. He played for the Florida Marlins, Houston Astros, Colorado Rockies, and Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers before signing with the Atlanta Braves in January . His last game was on July 29, 2005, when he fractured his humerus. Powell was the Win (baseball), winning pitcher of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series for the Florida Marlins. The firm of James Powell and Sons, also known as Whitefriars Glass, were London-based English glassmakers, leadlighters and stained-glass window manufacturers. As Whitefriars Glass, the company existed from the 18th century, but became well known as a result of the 19th-century Gothic Revival and the demand for stained glass windows. History Early years In 1834, James Powell (1774–1840) purchased the Whitefriars Glass Company, a small glassworks off Fleet Street in London, believed to have been established in 1680. He was a London wine merchant and entrepreneur, of the same family as the founder of the Scout movement, Robert Baden-Powell. James Powell (born 1932) is a Canadian author of mystery and humorous short stories. Many of his 130 stories have been published in ''Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine''. Jim Powell (17 May 1949 – 20 May 2023) was a British novelist, and a direct descendant of the 19th-century novelist Thomas Love Peacock. Powell also had careers in advertising and pottery, and was a political activist. Early life and education Born in London, Jim Powell was educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he took a master's degree in history. Jimmy Powell (13 October 1942 – 13 May 2016) was a British soul and rhythm and blues singer who recorded and performed throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, and is best remembered as the lead singer of Jimmy Powell and the 5 Dimensions, a group that briefly included Rod Stewart. Early life and career Powell was born in Selly Oak, Birmingham, and attended Turves Green School in the city. He began singing in his teens with a local skiffle group, and then a beat group, the Jumping Jacks, before forming his own band, the Detours, around 1959. In 1961, he became a professional singer when he joined the Rockin' Berries. James Theodore Powell (October 24, 1914 – February 16, 1994) was an American jazz saxophonist who played alto sax. He played on two recording dates with Billie Holiday for Columbia. The first, in February 1940, was with a band comprising Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Carl Frye and Powell on alto saxophones, Kermit Scott (musician) on tenor sax, Sonny White on piano, Lawrence Lucie on guitar, John Williams on bass and Hal West on drums. The second recording session was in May 1941, again with Eldridge, together with Lester Boone, Ernie Powell, and Jimmy Powell on alto saxophones, Eddie Heywood on piano, Paul Chapman on guitar, Grachan Moncur on bass, and Herbert Cowans on drums.
