James Martin (1738–1810)
James Martin (1738–1810) was a British banker and politician who sat in the House of Commons for 31 years from 1776 to 1807. Martin was the third son of John Martin MP banker, of Overbury and Lombard Street and his wife Catherine Jackson, daughter of Joseph Jackson of Sneyd Park, Gloucestershire. He was born on 4 June 1738 and was educated by Rev. Matthew Bloxam, vicar of Overbury and Rev. James Graham, of Hackney. On leaving school he entered the family banking house. He married Penelope Skipp, daughter of Joseph Skipp of Upper Hall, Ledbury, Herefordshire on 17 February 1774. Martin was elected Member of Parliament for Tewkesbury in a by-election on 8 April 1776 following the death of his brother Joseph. He "acquired a reputation for his scrupulously independent attitude". Martin was returned unopposed for Tewkesbury in the 1780 general election. James Cullen Martin
James Cullen Martin (January 14, 1928 – April 20, 1999) was an American chemist. Known in the field as "J.C.", he specialized in physical organic chemistry with an emphasis on main group element chemistry. Martin received his undergraduate and master's degree at Vanderbilt University. His PhD work was conducted with Paul Bartlett at Harvard. Most of his professional career was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a colleague of Roger Adams, Speed Marvel, David Y. Curtin, Nelson J. Leonard, and Reynold C. Fuson. Late in his career, he moved back to Vanderbilt, but soon succumbed to poor health. Professor Martin is best known for his work on bonding of main group elements. He is responsible for the hexafluorocumyl alcohol derived "Martin" bidentate ligand and a tridentate analog. Jim Martin (Australian Soldier)
James Charles Martin (3 January 1901 – 25 October 1915) was the youngest Australian known to have died in the First World War. He was only 14 years and nine months old when he succumbed to typhoid during the Gallipoli campaign. He was one of 20 Australian soldiers under the age of 18 known to have died in the First World War. Early life James Martin was born to Amelia and Charles Martin on 3 January 1901 in Tocumwal, New South Wales. His father was born Charles Marks, in Auckland, New Zealand; however, after emigrating to Australia and settling in Tocumwal, he changed his name to Martin to avoid discrimination for being Jewish. James Martin (6 May 1850 – 1 November 1933) was a British trade unionist. Born in Basford, Nottinghamshire, Martin moved with his family to Staveley in Derbyshire when he was nine, and began working in the Speedwell Colliery, initially as a door-trapper, then later as a driver. He attended William Street and Fort Street public schools and then Sydney Grammar School, becoming a businessman dealing in hardware and machinery. In 1872 he married Elizabeth Bates, with whom he had four children. In 1889 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Free Trade Party, Free Trade member for Electoral district of South Sydney, South Sydney. He transferred to Electoral district of Sydney-Bligh, Sydney-Bligh in 1894 but was defeated in 1895. James Martin (1821 – 27 December 1899) was an industrialist and politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. History James Martin was born in the hamlet of Foundry, in the parish of Stithians, Cornwall, in straitened circumstances, the seventh child of a woman whose husband had died a few months previously. He had little schooling, and after starting to earn his own money, he enrolled in night classes. He worked at the local factory making steel shovels, as a millwright in Truro's flour mills, and as a fitter in the Tresavean copper mine, where he was involved in the installation of a large mine pump and a prototype of Michael Loam's "man engine", all the time gaining practical engineering knowledge. He served as a maintenance worker at a woollens factory at Ponsanooth, where an older brother was manager.
