James Madison Dukes Football
The James Madison Dukes football program represents James Madison University in the sport of American football. The Dukes compete in the NCAA Division I NCAA Division I#Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC), beginning play within the conference for the 2022 season. The university first fielded a football team in 1972, and the Dukes play at the on-campus Bridgeforth Stadium and Zane Showker Field, Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Dukes are currently coached by Bob Chesney. The JMU football team has been the centerpiece of JMU sports since the early 1990s. NCAA Division I (D-I) is the highest division of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States, which accepts players globally. James Madison University (JMU, Madison, or James Madison) is a public university, public research university in Harrisonburg, Virginia, United States. Founded in 1908, the institution was renamed in 1938 in honor of the fourth president of the United States, James Madison. Royal Rivalry
The Royal Rivalry refers to the college rivalry games between the James Madison Dukes and the Old Dominion Monarchs of the Sun Belt Conference. It is an intra-conference match-up between two Div. I FBS public universities, James Madison University and Old Dominion University, in the Commonwealth of Virginia. History Both schools began sports competitions in the early 1970s as former Division II in-state opponents. The competitions intensified when both schools competed as full members of the Colonial Athletic Association following ODU's move to the conference in 1991. This undeclared in-state rivalry would last just over 20 years before ODU relocated to Conference USA in 2014 to become a member of the FBS. Old Dominion Monarchs Football
The Old Dominion Monarchs football program represents Old Dominion University in college football, U.S. college football. The first iteration of the team created in 1930 was known as the William & Mary Norfolk Division Braves. Founded in 2009, the current Monarchs team competed as an NCAA Division I FCS independent schools, FCS independent for their first two seasons. In the 2011 season, they joined the Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference, Colonial Athletic Association and added conference games to their schedule, playing there until joining the Conference USA of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, FBS in 2014. Delaware–James Madison Football Rivalry
The Delaware–James Madison football rivalry is the U.S. college football rivalry between the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens and the James Madison Dukes. As of the 2025 FBS season, it will be a dormant matchup between two similarly sized Division I FBS schools in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. History The rivalry became an annual affair in 1993 when the Dukes joined the football-only Yankee Conference. Marching Royal Dukes
The Marching Royal Dukes (MRDs), nicknamed "Virginia's Finest", is James Madison University's official marching band. Formed in 1972 alongside the football team, the band performs a pre-game, halftime and post-game show at all home football games. In 1994, the MRDs were the recipients of the Sudler Trophy, the highest honor available for a college marching band. The MRDs have performed at venues such as the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the NFC title game between Washington and Dallas in 1983, Bands of America Grand National Championships in 1988 and 1991. The band has made four appearances in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, first in 2001, again in 2008 and 2013, and most recently in 2018. In the past decade, the band has taken trips to Europe during the school's winter break, featuring Athens, Dublin, Monaco, London, Paris, and Rome. Duke Dog
Duke Dog is the official mascot for the James Madison University Dukes. "Dukes" was made the official nickname in 1947, and was named after the University's president from 1919 to 1949, Samuel Page Duke. However, the bulldog was not chosen to represent the Dukes until the 1972–1973 school year. After a decade of the original costume, Dr. Ray V. Sonner revamped the appearance of Duke Dog in the 1982–83 school year. On November 28, 1982, Duke Dog appeared in JMU's first home game of the men's basketball season against the Virginia Military Institute. In 2004, Duke Dog was named a finalist for the Capital One Mascot Bowl. After eleven weeks of voting, Duke Dog won its matchup each week to finish a perfect 11–0.
