''How to be Loved'' () is a 1963 Polish film, directed by Wojciech Has. The film, based on a novel of the same name by Kazimierz Brandys, examines the emotional casualties of war, which is perhaps the central theme of the Polish Film School. On a deeper level, the film manages to construct a personal tragedy that results from a struggle of egoism and cowardice versus devotion and courage. The film was entered into the 1963 Cannes Film Festival. Plot On a plane bound for Paris, Felicja ( Barbara Krafftówna), a successful radio actress, recalls the night in 1939 when she was to debut as Ophelia, with the man she loved, Wiktor (Zbigniew Cybulski), playing Hamlet. Wojciech Has
Wojciech Jerzy Has (1 April 1925 – 3 October 2000) was a Polish film director, screenwriter and film producer. Early life and studies Wojciech Jerzy Has was born in Kraków. Has himself was agnostic. However, his family on both sides was Roman Catholic, although he was a philosemite. He had Jewish roots on his father's side, and Roman Catholic on his mother's. The name ''Has'' is the Hollandic, Yiddish and Germanised Jewish surname ''Haas'' (האָז), meaning ''hare'' in English. During the wartime German occupation of Poland, Has studied at the Kraków Business and Commerce College and later clandestine underground classes at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts – until it was disbanded in 1943. When the war ended, he went on to study at the reconstituted Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Zdzisław Maklakiewicz
Zdzisław Maklakiewicz (9 July 1927 in Warsaw – 9 October 1977) was a Polish actor. He was the nephew of composers Jan and Tadeusz Maklakiewicz. Biography During World War II, Maklakiewicz served in the Home Army. He took part in the Warsaw Uprising (using the pseudonym of "Hanzen"), fighting in the city center as a gunner in the motorized company "Iskra" battalion "Kiliński". After the capitulation of Warsaw, he was taken to a German POW camp (Stalag XVIII-C Markt Pongau, no POW: 105022), from where he returned to Poland in September 1945. In 1947 he began studying acting in Kraków, then in the Theatre Academy in Warsaw, graduating in 1950. He tried to study directing, but did not complete these studies. He was an actor in the Theatre Syrena, the Polish Theatre in Warsaw, and the Ludowy Theatre. From 1958 to 1962, he was an actor in the Coastal Theatre in Gdansk.
