This article details each of the lines operated by the Isle of Man Railway, including the original line to Peel in the west, opened in 1873, followed by the Port Erin line the following year (which is still fully operational today), as well as the Manx Northern Railway's line between St John's and Ramsey and the Foxdale Railway's line between St John's and Foxdale (the latter two of which were independent companies bought out in 1905 by the Isle Of Man Railway Company). The Isle of Man Railway (IMR) ( gv, Raad Yiarn Vannin) is a narrow gauge steam-operated railway connecting Douglas with Castletown and Port Erin on the Isle of Man. The line is narrow gauge and long. The Isle of Man TT or Tourist Trophy races are an annual motorcycle racing event run on the Isle of Man in May/June of most years since its inaugural race in 1907. The event is often called one of the most dangerous racing events in the world as many competitors have died. The Bishop of Sodor and Man is the Ordinary of the Diocese of Sodor and Man (Manx Gaelic: ''Sodor as Mannin'') in the Province of York in the Church of England. Foxdale Railway
The Foxdale Railway was a narrow gauge branch line which ran from St. John's to Foxdale on the Isle of Man. History The line was officially opened by the Foxdale Railway Company Ltd. (registered on ) on allowing rail access to the lead mining workings around the village of Foxdale. The company had close ties to the Manx Northern Railway (MNR), many of whose directors were also on the board of the smaller company. The line was leased from the outset by the MNR. Shortly after the line had opened, the lead mining industry started to decline and in the Foxdale company went into liquidation. The fortunes of the MNR were closely tied to the Foxdale line due to the terms of the lease being favourable to the smaller concern. Glen Wyllin
Glen Wyllin is a glen in the Isle of Man. It is one of the officially-listed Manx National Glens. The Glen Wyllin Pleasure Grounds are owned by the Isle of Man Railway whose line crossed the valley by means of a viaduct, this area was once the site of much activity for the holiday maker and Sunday School tripper. The grounds at Glen Wyllin were developed in the late 19th century upon the arrival of the railway and included a boating lake, merry-go-round, attractions and of course the beach which adjoins it. Today the site is still maintained as a camp site and features a shop, communal showers and toilets, and a children's play area, all dominated by the two towering pillars which once supported the viaduct carrying the railway line, but it is a shadow of its former self, having been a booming centre for leisure in the halcyon days of tourism on the island, still so fondly remembered by the local Sunday School children and the like. Manx Northern Railway
The Manx Northern Railway (MNR) was the second common carrier railway built in the Isle of Man. It operated as an independent concern only from 1879 to 1905. History When the people in the town of Ramsey realised their town was not going to be incorporated into the newly promoted Isle of Man Railway (IOMR) network in the 1870s it was left to them to promote their own railway as a link with the rest of the island. The rugged geography of the east coast forced the Manx Northern Railway into an indirect route: first westwards to Kirk Michael and then south to St John's where a junction could be made with the Isle of Man Railway's Peel to Douglas line which opened in 1873. One of the characteristics of the Isle of Man Railway are the numerous level crossings and farm crossings along the various routes; many smaller crossing places are marked only by gates the criss-cross farm land and provide access to individual private roads which connect the farms to the main roads.
