Iraq Veterans Against The War
About Face (formerly Iraq Veterans Against the War) is an advocacy group founded in 2004 of formerly active-duty United States military personnel, Iraq War veterans, War in Afghanistan (2001–present), Afghanistan War veterans, and other veterans who have served since the September 11, 2001 attacks; who were opposed to the Iraq War, U.S. military invasion and occupation in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. The organization advocated the immediate withdrawal of all coalition forces in Iraq, and reparations paid to the Iraqi people. It also provides support services for returning veterans including health care and mental health. Al Hubbard (activist), Al Hubbard, co-founder of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, has stated his support of the organization. 2009 Fort Hood Shooting
On November 5, 2009, a mass shooting took place at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), near Killeen, Texas, United States. Nidal Hasan, a Major (United States), U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others. It was the deadliest mass shooting on an American military base and the deadliest Terrorism in the United States, terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks until it was surpassed by the 2015 San Bernardino attack, San Bernardino attack in 2015. Hasan was shot and as a result paraplegia, paralyzed from the waist down. He was arraigned by a military court in 2011 and was charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Stephen Funk
Stephen Funk (born June 15, 1982) is a former United States Marine Corps Landing Support Specialist and Lance Corporal reservist. He was the first person to publicly refuse to deploy in Iraq. Background Stephen Funk decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps after 9/11, signing a six-year contract in February 2002. Near the end of boot camp, he shot expert at the rifle range, at 200-, 300- and 500-yards. Despite this, his instructor told him that he would not shoot as well in combat; Funk later said, "I told him he was right, because I felt killing was wrong." Prior to enlisting, Funk had a background in social activism having attended an alternative high school called The Nova Project. Under The Hood Café
Under the Hood Café was a coffee house located at 17 South College Street in Killeen, Texas. It provided services for soldiers located at Fort Cavazos (then Fort Hood), one of the largest American military installations in the world. Under the Hood Café was first managed by Cynthia Thomas, but later managers were Kyle Wesolowski, Lori Hurlebaus and Malachi Muncy. Under the Hood is a project of the Fort Hood Support Network. It billed itself as being a safe place for local soldiers to spend off-duty time at, where the normal issues of rank are irrelevant. It was also the host of the monthly Killeen Poetry Slam. The coffeehouse closed its doors in 2015. Coffee Strong
Coffee Strong was a GI coffeehouse based on the tradition of resistance coffee houses opened during the Vietnam War by antiwar veterans and active duty soldiers in the United States. Based in Lakewood, Washington, it was founded in 2008 by veterans returning from the War in Afghanistan (2001–present), wars in Afghanistan and Iraq War, Iraq. It was located within 300 meters of the gates at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The Coffee Strong advisory board included linguist and dissident Noam Chomsky, Marjorie Cohn, Mike Ferner, Eva Golinger, Dahr Jamail, Antonia Juhasz, Ann WCol. The Ground Truth
''The Ground Truth'' (also known as ''The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends'') is a 2006 documentary film about veterans of the Iraq War. It was directed and produced by Patricia Foulkrod. Plot The film addresses the issues many soldiers face upon their return from the War in Iraq, including problems with posttraumatic stress disorder and an inability to meld back into "normal" society. The film includes footage of soldiers in Iraq and personal interviews with about two dozen people directly affected by the war (either veterans or family members/friends of veterans). The veterans, both men and women, speak of their experiences before, during, and after the war. The veterans speak about recruitment and training, combat, their returns home, facing their families, and their difficulties in making the necessary changes needed to fit back into society. Gold Star Families For Peace
Gold Star Families for Peace (GSFP) is a United States–based organization founded in January 2005 by individuals who lost family members in the Iraq War, and are thus entitled to display a Gold Star. It is considered an offshoot of Military Families Speak Out. Gold Star Families for Peace now includes more than 65 families of troops killed in Iraq. Joining with organizations including Veterans for Peace, United for Peace and Justice, Code Pink, Military Families Speak Out, the Crawford Peace House and others, GSFP is actively protesting US military action in Iraq. They have used speaking engagements, congressional testimony and protests throughout the United States. GSFP regarded the George W.
