The International Pageant of Pulchritude, also known as Miss Universe or the International Beauty Contest, was a beauty contest that began in 1920, featuring contestants from multiple nations. This pageant originated the title "Miss Universe" and was the first List of beauty contests, international contest. The last pageant event in the United States was held in 1931 and additional Miss Universe events were held until 1935. The contest served as a model for modern contests that began after World War II. The contest originated in Galveston, Texas, United States. The last Miss Universe event of this pre-World War II era was held in Brussels, Belgium. Lisl Goldarbeiter (23 March 1909 – 14 December 1997) was an Austrians, Austrian model and actress, who in 1929, became the first and only Austrian to win the International Pageant of Pulchritude, Miss Universe title. She also participated in the Miss Europe 1929, Miss Europe competition in 1929. Life Goldarbeiter was born on 23 March 1909, in Vienna, Austria. She was born in a middle-class Austro-Hungarians, Austro-Hungarian Jews, Jewish family. She was the daughter of Izidor Goldarbeiter (b.1877), a fashion dealer from Szeged, Hungary, and, Aloisia née Schimek (1884–1967). Dorothy Dell (born Dorothy Dell Goff; January 30, 1915 – June 8, 1934) was an American film actress. She died in an auto accident at the age of 19. The Second International Pageant of Pulchritude and Eighth Annual Bathing Girl Revue was held from May 21 to 23, 1927, in Galveston, Texas. More contestants from outside the United States entered the pageant compared to the previous year, with women from Cuba, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Spain joining. Canada and Mexico also sent delegates, as they had in 1926. There were also 29 contestants from the United States. An estimated 250,000 people attended the events during that weekend, and over $5000 in prizes were given to the winners. Catherine Moylan
Catherine May Moylan (July 4, 1904September 9, 1969) was an American film actress, model, and beauty queen who won the 1926 International Pageant of Pulchritude. She subsequently appeared in two Broadway productions before having a short film career, including roles in '' Our Blushing Brides'' and '' Love in the Rough'' (both 1930). From the mid-1930s onward, Moylan spent the remainder of her life living outside the public eye in Fort Worth, Texas, where she died in 1969 of heart failure. 1926 International Pageant Of Pulchritude
The First International Pageant of Pulchritude and Seventh Annual Bathing Girl Revue, was a beauty pageant held from May 15 to 17, 1926, in Galveston, Texas. The previous editions of the Galveston Bathing Girl Revue had only featured contestants from the United States. However, during the 1926 event, one contestant from Mexico and another from Canada entered, giving the pageant its first international competitors. It was reported that around 160,000 people watched the bathing costume parade on the afternoon of the 16th.
