PEN International
PEN International (known as International PEN until 2010) is a worldwide professional association, association of writers, founded in London in 1921 to promote friendship and intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere. The association has autonomous International PEN centres in more than 100 countries. Other goals included: to emphasise the role of literature in the development of mutual understanding and world culture; to fight for freedom of expression; and to act as a powerful voice on behalf of writers harassed, imprisoned and sometimes killed for their views. History The first PEN Club was founded at the Florence Restaurant in London on October 5, 1921, by Catherine Amy Dawson Scott, with John Galsworthy as its first president. New Zealand Society Of Authors
The New Zealand Society of Authors (PEN New Zealand Inc.) promotes and protects the interests of New Zealand writers. It was founded as the New Zealand PEN Centre (Poets, Essays and Novelists) in 1934. It broadened its scope and became the New Zealand Society of Authors in 1994, under the presidency of writer Philip Temple. There are eight branches covering all regions of New Zealand. Branches were established in Wellington and Auckland first, and later in Otago and Canterbury. The Otago Branch was established in Dunedin in 1982 under the leadership of writer and artist Christodoulos Moisa, who had moved to there from Auckland. He was helped by poet Graham Lindsay. Moisa had been nominated for membership by ''Auckland Star'' editor and writer David Ballantyne and Prof. Bernard Brown before he left Auckland to live in Dunedin. Sydney PEN, also referred as International PEN Sydney Centre, is an association of Australian writers and readers, publishers, and human rights activists based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Founded in 1931, it is one of the three Australian PEN Centres, which are affiliates of PEN International. PEN, founded in 1921, stands for "Poets, Essayists, and Novelists". Human Rights In Belarus
The government of Belarus is criticized for human rights violations and persecution of non-governmental organisations, independent journalists, national minorities, and opposition politicians. In a testimony to the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice labeled Belarus as one of the world's six " outposts of tyranny". In response, the Belarusian government called the assessment "quite far from reality". During the 2020 Belarusian presidential election and 2020 Belarusian protests, the number of political prisoners recognized by Viasna Human Rights Centre rose dramatically to 1,062 as of 16 February 2022. Several people died after the use of unlawful and abusive force (including firearms) by law enforcement officials while suppressing protests. Supreme Court Of Belarus
The Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus is the highest-tier court inside of Belarus and acts as the final "court of review." Its general tasks include the oversight of lower-tier courts and it can render justice in areas of general civil and criminal law. Unlike the United States Supreme Court, constitutional issues are not sent to the Belarusian Supreme Court, but are sent to a separate court called the Constitutional Court. PEN Center of Bosnia and Herzegovina (P.E.N. Centar u Bosni i Hercegovini / П.Е.Н. Центар у Босни и Херцеговини) is one of the 148 centres of PEN International, and is based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was founded in the first year of the war in Bosnia, on 31 October 1992. As part of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina didn't have the right for membership as an independent center, according to the rules of the International PEN. History PEN Center of Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the 148 centres of PEN International, and is based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The founding assembly was convened on 31 October 1992, and held in Holiday Inn Hotel in Sarajevo, under heavy shelling as the Bosnian war and the Siege of Sarajevo already started. PEN Centre Germany is part of the worldwide association of writers founded in London in 1921, now known as PEN International. One of over 140 autonomous PEN centres around the world, PEN Centre Germany is based in Darmstadt, Hesse. Work PEN Centre Germany upholds the objectives of PEN International in protecting the freedom of intellectual expression throughout the world. Hungarian PEN
Hungarian PEN Club is an affiliate of International PEN. The Hungarian Club was established in 1926 by Antal Radó. Early writers associated with the club included Albert Berzeviczy and Jenő Rákosi. Prominent members include Zsolt Harsányi, Miklós Hubay, Dezső Kosztolányi, Sándor Márai, Árpád Göncz, Gábor Görgey, and Zoltán Sumonyi. Kurdish PEN
Kurdish PEN or the Kurdish Centre of the International PEN (''Navenda PEN a Kurd'' in Kurdish) is a branch of International PEN. It was suggested by Kurdish writer Hüseyin Erdem and voted into existence during International PEN's conference in Cambridge in 1988. Its headquarters are located in Cologne, Germany. The Kurdish PEN Center actively works with Kurdish writers in all parts of Kurdistan to promote the Kurdish language and literature. The Center is headed by Dr. Zaradachet Hajo. Kurdish PEN publishes research articles related to Kurdish culture in four languages: English, German, Spanish and Kurdish. The Kurdish PEN is also active in Turkey, where it organized a conference on cultural diversity in March 2005 in Diyarbakır.
