The Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team represents the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, United States. They are currently led by fifth-year head coach Carson Cunningham. Beginning in 2013, the Cardinals made the jump to NCAA Division I and joined the Southland Conference. As part of their transition from Division II to Division I, they were not eligible for postseason play until 2018. The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is a private, Catholic university with its main campus in San Antonio and Alamo Heights, Texas. Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the university's main campus is located on . It is the largest Catholic university in Texas. It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. The 2002 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament was the 46th annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division II college basketball in the United States. The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Carson Cunningham
Carson Cunningham (born May 7, 1977) is an American basketball coach and author who is currently an assistant coach for the Army Black Knights basketball team. He is the former head coach of the Incarnate Word Cardinals men's basketball team. Playing career Cunningham was a standout basketball player at Andrean High School in Merrillville, Indiana, where he was a four-year letterwinner and a three-time first team all-area selection, as well as first team all-state selection and USA Today honorable mention All-American as a senior. Playing his freshman season of college basketball at Oregon State, Cunningham averaged 14.9 points per game, earning a place on the 1997 Pacific 10 All-Freshman team. The Incarnate Word Cardinals, also known as UIW Cardinals, are composed of 23 teams representing the University of the Incarnate Word in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track and field.
