Ice Speedway
Ice speedway is a developed form of motorcycle speedway racing, featuring racing on frozen surfaces. The sport uses bikes enhanced for the terrain. Participants can compete at international level. Outline The bikes race counterclockwise around oval tracks between 260 and 425 metres in length. The race structure and scoring are similar to that in Motorcycle speedway, speedway. History Ice speedway is an evolution of dirt speedway racing, which first started in 1923. Staten Lorenz of Michigan is generally credited with the invention of the sport, in 1975. The first ice speedway event was organized and promoted by a local motorcycle dealer in Huntsville, Alabama. The third ever event was hosted at the Kent State University hockey field house, which speedway rider Gary Densford was invited to attend by his friend Bob Hetrick. The International Motorcycling Federation (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) or (FIM) is the global governing/sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 123 national motorcycle federations that are divided into six continental unions. Nikolai Krasnikov
Nikolay Olegovich Krasnikov (; 4 February 1985 – 16 June 2025) was a Russian twenty-time ice speedway world champion. Career After finishing third at the 2004 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship, Krasnikov won eight consecutive Individual Ice Speedway World Championship titles from 2005 until 2012 and twelve Team Ice Racing World Championship titles with Russia from 2004 until 2016. He is regarded as one of the leading ice speedway riders of all-time. Per-Olof Serenius
Per-Olof "Posa" Serenius (born 9 March 1948) in Hedemora, Sweden, is a Swedish former ice speedway rider. He is notable for winning two World Individual Championship gold medals in ice speedway. Biography Serenius was a fireman by profession. Already an experienced motorcyclist, he began to compete in ice speedway racing in 1976 after witnessing a World Championship ice speedway competition in Berlin. His career racing record includes two World Individual Championship gold medals, three World Team gold medals, 32 World finals, 22 national championships and eight Nordic Championships. He participated in the documentary film ''Icy Riders'' from 2008. In 2016, Serenius was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycle racing achievements. The FIM Ice Speedway of Nations, formerly known as the Ice Speedway Team World Championship, is an international ice speedway competition, first held in Kalinin (Tver), Soviet Union, USSR, in 1979. Since its establishment, the tournament has been noted by a continued Russian dominance: the Soviet Union, Commonwealth of Independent States and Russia have won all but three tournaments. The only non-Russian teams to have won were West Germany in 1983, and Sweden - in 1985, 1995 and 2002. The event has not been held since 2020 initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Individual Ice Racing World Championship
The Individual Ice Speedway World Championship is an Ice speedway championship held annually to determine an individual World Champion. History The first Championships were held in 1966. A European Championship was held for the two years preceding the World Championships. The event has been dominated by the Soviet Union/Russia, who have won all but seven of the World Championship titles since 1966. Sweden has won five times, Czechoslovakia twice and Finland once. In 2021 and 2022 Russian athletes competed as neutral competitors using the designation MFR (Motorcycle Federation of Russia), as the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a ban on Russia competing at World Championships.
