I-8 Road (Bulgaria)
Republic road I-8 () is a major road in Southern Bulgaria. It runs between Kalotina, at the border with Serbia, and the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing to Turkey. The total length of the road is . Most of it provides one driving lane per direction. Road I-8 follows European route E80 in its entire length. Description Road I-8 begins from Kalotina checkpoint, at the border with Serbia. The road bypasses the cities of Dragoman and Slivnitsa. Between Slivnitsa and Sofia, the road runs as a 4-lane single-carriageway. Kalotina motorway is planned to replace and supersede I-8 between Sofia and the Serbian border. Road I-8 joins the northern arc of Sofia ring road and then it shares 6 km with Trakia motorway (A1). Kalotina
Kalotina ( bg, Калотина ) is a village in Dragoman Municipality, Sofia Province, in westernmost central Bulgaria. As of 2010 it has 270 inhabitants and the mayor is Lidia Bozhilova. The village is located at the border with Serbia, 55 km to the northwest of the capital Sofia, on the main highway and railway between Western Europe and Asia. Kalotina lies at , 282 metres above sea level. Kalotina is known for the Kalotina- Gradinje border checkpoint, one of Bulgaria's busiest and best known due to the proximity to Sofia. The Nishava River, a tributary of the South Morava, flows nearby. The village was first mentioned in 1453 with its present name. In a 1576 source, it was referred to as ''Kalotine''. Ihtiman
Ihtiman ( bg, Ихтиман ) is a town in western Bulgaria, part of Sofia Province. It is located in the Ihtimanska Sredna Gora mountains and lies in a valley 48 km from Sofia and 95 km from Plovdiv, close to the Trakiya motorway. Formerly a Roman defensive station guarding the important roads to the Bosphorus, Ihtiman was then called ''Stipon''. It continued to play this role under the Byzantine Empire and the Bulgarian Empire, which however shifted its main defensive centre in the region to the Gate of Trajan hill pass. Following the Ottoman domination in the 14th century, the town's name was changed to ''Ihtiman'', which is thought to be of Ottoman Turkish origin. Vakarel
Vakarel ( bg, Вакарел) is a village, away from Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Population: 1984 people. It is situated in the Sredna Gora mountains, within Ihtiman Municipality. The village is an important transport knot along the Sofia - Plovdiv railway route. The Trakiya motorway runs near Vakarel. Vakarel is 822 meters above sea level. About away from the village is the Vakarel Radio Transmitter. Near Vakarel is the Vakarelian Monastery 'Saint Petka'. The monastery is relatively new, established in the 20th century. Trakia Motorway
The Trakia motorway (, ) or Thrace motorway, designated A1, is a motorway in Bulgaria. It connects the capital city of Sofia, the city of Plovdiv and the city of Burgas on the Black Sea coast. The motorway is named after the historical region of Thrace, the northern (Bulgarian) part of which it spans from west to east. The total length of Trakia motorway is and the final section opened on 15 July 2013 after 40 years of construction. Kalotina Motorway
The Europe motorway (, ), designated A6, is a motorway that will link the Bulgarian capital Sofia with Serbia at the Kalotina border crossing. Spanning approximately , the motorway is planned to be connected with the Serbian A4 motorway. In 2018 the government changed its name from Kalotina motorway to Europe motorway, as well as merging the Northern Sofia Bypass in it and designating it A6. Tenders The first 31.5 km of the motorway (Kalotina– Herakovo) were tendered in 2012, and the construction works were expected to begin in 2013.
