Quintus Horatius Flaccus
Quintus Horatius Flaccus (; 8 December 65 – 27 November 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace (), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). The rhetorician Quintilian regarded his '' Odes'' as just about the only Latin lyrics worth reading: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words."Quintilian 10.1.96. The only other lyrical poet Quintilian thought comparable with Horace was the now obscure poet/metrical theorist, Caesius Bassus (R. Horace Avory
Sir Horace Edmund Avory (31 August 1851 – 13 June 1935) was an English High Court judge. Biography He was the son of Henry Avory, clerk of the Central Criminal Court. He was educated at King's College London, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he was captain of boats and took the degree of LL.B. in 1874. He became a barrister of the Inner Temple in 1875 and married Maria Louisa Castle in 1877. He was elected Bencher in 1908 and was knighted and made a judge, later to become a senior judge, of the King's Bench division in 1910. He received a Hon.D.LL. degree in 1911 and was made Treasurer in 1929. He died at Rye, East Sussex. Avory was one of the most noted English criminal lawyers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Colonel Horace Hutton Barnet (6 March 1856 – 29 March 1941) was an English soldier and footballer. Early and personal life Barnet was born on 6 March 1856 in Kensington, which was then in Middlesex. Horace Barnes
Horace Barnes (3 January 1891 – 12 September 1961) was an English footballer, who played for Derby County, Manchester City, Preston North End and Oldham Athletic. Early life Horace Barnes was born in Sheffield in 1891. He began his football career playing as an inside left for Wadsley Bridge. During the First World War, he worked in munitions and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Derby County In 1908 Jimmy Methven signed Horace for Derby County. Horace Barlow
Horace Basil Barlow FRS (8 December 1921 – 5 July 2020) was a British vision scientist. Life Barlow was the son of the civil servant Sir Alan Barlow and his wife Lady Nora (granddaughter of the naturalist Charles Darwin). He was educated at Winchester College, and earned an M.D. at Harvard University in 1946. Barlow was married twice and had seven children and 13 grandchildren. Barlow died on 5 July 2020, at the age of 98. Research In 1953, Barlow discovered that the frog brain has neurons which fire in response to specific visual stimuli. This was a precursor to the work of Hubel and Wiesel on visual receptive fields in the visual cortex. Horace Barks
Horace Barks, OBE (1895-1983) was a British Labour politician. He was Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent in 1951–2. Barks was born in Ipstones in the Staffordshire countryside and came from a working-class background. His experiences in World War I left him with pacifist beliefs and experience of railway operations. After the war he became a train guard and, in 1921, a member of the Labour Party, the dominant party in Stoke-on-Trent during the twentieth century. He was elected a councillor in 1930 and made an Alderman in 1948. He served as Mayor for 1951–52. Barks' cultural interests included Esperanto and the writer Arnold Bennett. Barks and his son Guy were active in the Arnold Bennett Society, which is based in Stoke-on-Trent. The reference library in the city is named after Barks. Horace Albert "Nook" Barker (November 29, 1907 – December 24, 2000) was an American biochemist and microbiologist who studied the operation of biological and chemical processes in plants, humans and other animals, including using radioactive tracers to determine the role enzymes play in synthesizing sucrose. Horace Baldwin (18011850) was mayor of Houston, Texas in 1844. His brother-in-law, Augustus Chapman Allen, was a co-founder of Houston, Texas. A former resident of Baldwinsville, New York, Baldwin came to Houston based on the encouragement of his sister, Charlotte Baldwin Allen. Horace Anthony Baker (1 September 1910 – 1 March 1974) was an English footballer who played at outside-right for Port Vale, Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury Town and Southport. He younger brother, Frank, was also a professional footballer. Early and personal life Horace Anthony Baker was the son of a former Fenton Town player and four of his brothers also played football, including the youngest Frank, who went on to play for Stoke City. Baker worked as a bus conductor prior to World War II and was working as a spot-welder when he died of a heart attack during his sleep on 1 March 1974.
