Hermopolis
Hermopolis ( grc, Ἑρμούπολις ''Hermoúpolis'' "the City of Hermes", also ''Hermopolis Magna'', ''Hermoû pólis megálẽ'', egy, ḫmnw , Egyptological pronunciation: "Khemenu"; cop, Ϣⲙⲟⲩⲛ ''Shmun''; ar, الأشمونين) was a major city in antiquity, located near the boundary between Lower and Upper Egypt. A provincial capital since the Old Kingdom of Egypt, Hermopolis developed into a major city of Roman Egypt, and an early Christian center from the third century. It was abandoned after the Muslim conquest but was restored as both a Latin Catholic (meanwhile suppressed) and a Coptic Orthodox titular see. Its remains are located near the modern town of el Ashmunein (from the Coptic name) in Mallawi, Minya Governorate, Egypt. Damanhur ( ar, دمنهور ', ; Egyptian: ''Dmỉ-n-Ḥr.w''; cop, ⲡϯⲙⲓⲛ̀ϩⲱⲣ '; ; grc, Ἑρμοῦ πόλις μικρά ') is a city in Lower Egypt, and the capital of the Beheira Governorate. It is located northwest of Cairo, and E.S.E. of Alexandria, in the middle of the western Nile Delta. Etymology Damanhur was known in the ancient Egyptian language as ''The City of (the god) Horus'', on the grounds that it was a center for the worship of this god. Hermopolis (Greek: ), also known as Hermopolis Parva, was the Greek name for two cities in ancient Egypt. One was the capital of Tehuti, the 15th nome of Lower Egypt, situated a little below Thmuis ( Strabo xvii. p. 802; Steph. B. ''s. v.''). The site is currently at Tell al-Naqus near Baqliya. The ancient Egyptian names of this city were Ba'h and Weprehwy or Rehehui.
