Henry Fane Of Brympton
Henry Fane (1669–1726) of Brympton, Somerset was a great-grandson of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland and father of Thomas Fane, 8th Earl of Westmorland. Henry was born in 1669 the fourth son of Francis Fane a noted Restoration dramatist, and Hannah, daughter of John Rushworth of the county of Essex. He was the second son to be named Henry and the second eldest to survive his father. Henry made a fortune through Bristol privateering and trade in West Africa and West Indies. He was Clark to the Society of Merchant Venturers of the City of Bristol from 1701 to 1726 when his son Thomas took over from him. Henry married Anne, sister and coheir of John Scrope of Wormsley, and granddaughter of the regicide Colonel Adrian Scrope who was hanged, drawn and quartered after the restoration as one of the regicides of Charles I. Brympton
Brympton is a civil parish and electoral ward in Somerset, England. The parish is situated on the north-west edge of Yeovil in the South Somerset district. The parish/ward has a population of 7,308. The civil parish covers the western part of the Yeovil built up area, including the stadium of Yeovil Town F.C. at Huish Park, and also includes the hamlets of Brympton D'Evercy, Lufton, Thorne Coffin and Alvington as well as part of Chilthorne Domer. History An important late Roman villa was excavated at Lufton by Leonard Hayward of Yeovil Grammar School during the 1950s and 1960s. Further work on this villa and its landscape was undertaken by archaeologists from Newcastle University between 2012 and 2017. The villa is a corridor building with an unusual octagonal plunge bath. Westbury-on-Trym
Westbury on Trym is a suburb and council ward in the north of the City of Bristol, near the suburbs of Stoke Bishop, Westbury Park, Henleaze, Southmead and Henbury, in the southwest of England. With a village atmosphere, the place is partly named after the River Trym, which flows through it. History The origins of Westbury on Trym predate those of Bristol itself. In the 6th century Westbury was in the territory of Hwicce, which became part of Mercia in the 7th century. The earliest record of Westbury, in the form ''Uuestburg'', was in a charter dated between 793 and 796. ''-burg'' or ''-bury'' was from the Old English ''burh'', which usually meant a fort but could also mean a fortified house or a minster. Henry Fane Of Wormsley
Henry Fane (16 October 1703 – 31 May 1777), of Wormsley near Watlington, Oxfordshire, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1757 to 1777. Early life Fane was the third son of Henry Fane (1669–1726) of Brympton and Anne Scrope, sister of John Scrope of Wormsley. His grandfather was Francis Fane, a Restoration dramatist He was appointed one of the chief clerks of the Board of Treasury in 1742 and held the post until July 1764. In 1756 he was appointed a clerk of the Privy Council. Political career Fane followed a long line of Fanes as Members of Parliament for Lyme Regis, the family's pocket borough, inherited from John Scrope. At times this provided the Fanes with up to two MPs at the same time. Fane's two brothers Thomas and Francis represented Lyme Regis in Parliament. John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland (24 March 1685 – 26 August 1762), styled The Honourable John Fane from 1691 to 1733 and Lord Catherlough from 1733 to 1736, of Mereworth Castle in Kent, was a British Army officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons in three separate stretches between 1708 and 1734. Earl of Westmorland is a title that has been created twice in the Peerage of England. The title was first created in 1397 for Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, Ralph Neville. It was forfeited in 1571 by Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmorland, for leading the Rising of the North. It was revived in 1624 in favour of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland, Sir Francis Fane, whose mother, Mary Neville, was a descendant of a younger son of the first Earl. Francis Fane Of Brympton
Francis Fane KC (c. 1698 – 28 May 1757) of Brympton d'Evercy, near Yeovil, Somerset, and later Wormsley, Oxfordshire was a Commissioner for Trade and the Plantations, and a British Member of Parliament. Early life Francis Fane was the eldest son of Henry Fane, a Bristol merchant. He was educated at King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1715, after which he attended the Middle Temple and was called to the bar in 1721. As the eldest son he succeeded in 1726 to his father's estate. The next year he became a King's Counsellor and a Middle Temple bencher. He was appointed standing council to the Board of Trade and Plantations in 1725, a position he held until 1746. In 1731 he bought the estate at Brympton d'Evercy from the Receiver General. Parliamentary career He initially represented Taunton in Somersetshire in the parliament which first sat for business on 27 January 1728 ( N.S.).
