Hoechst AG () was a German chemicals, later life sciences, company that became Aventis Deutschland after its merger with France's Rhône-Poulenc S.A. in 1999. With the new company's 2004 merger with Sanofi-Synthélabo, it became a subsidiary of the resulting Sanofi-Aventis pharmaceuticals group. History The company was founded in 1863 as "Teerfarbenfabrik Meister, Lucius & Co." in Höchst, near Frankfurt and changed its name some years later to "Teerfarbenfabrik Meister Lucius & Brüning". Hoechst Stain
Hoechst stains are part of a family of blue fluorescent dyes used to stain DNA. These bis-benzimides were originally developed by Hoechst AG, which numbered all their compounds so that the dye Hoechst 33342 is the 33,342nd compound made by the company. There are three related Hoechst stains: Hoechst 33258, Hoechst 33342, and Hoechst 34580. The dyes Hoechst 33258 and Hoechst 33342 are the ones most commonly used and they have similar excitation– emission spectra. Molecular characteristics Both dyes are excited by ultraviolet light at around 350 nm, and both emit blue-cyan fluorescent light around an emission spectrum maximum at 461 nm. Unbound dye has its maximum fluorescence emission in the 510–540 nm range. Hoechst stains can be excited with a xenon- or mercury-arc lamp or with an ultraviolet laser. Höchst (Frankfurt Am Main)
Höchst () is a neighbourhood and market town in the '' Ortsbezirk'' of Frankfurt-West in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Höchst is situated west of Frankfurt city centre, on the north bank of the Main at the confluence with the River Nidda. Its old town is famous for around 400 timber framed houses. On 1 July 1917, Sindlingen, Unterliederbach and Zeilsheim were incorporated to Höchst am Main. In 1928 Höchst became incorporated into Frankfurt am Main, along with Sindlingen, Unterliederbach and Zeilsheim. The well-preserved old city with its 400 half-timbered houses has been under the ''Denkmalschutz'' protection law since 1972. Nicole Höchst (born 10 February 1970) is a German politician for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and since 2017 member of the Bundestag. Her positions are described by various interest groups as homophobic and hostile, which Höchst disputes. Life and politics Höchst was born in 1970 in the West German town of Homburg (Saar) and became a teacher. Höchst entered the AfD in 2015 and became after the 2017 German federal election a member of the Bundestag. Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter
Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter (16 February 1787 – 20 February 1860) was a German botanist and Protestant minister. Biography Hochstetter was born in Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg. He was the father of geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829–1884). In 1807, Hochstetter received his degree of Master of Divinity in Tübingen. While still a student, he became a member of a secret organization headed by Carl Ludwig Reichenbach (1788–1869) that had designs on establishing a colony on Tahiti (''Otaheiti-Gesellschaft''). In 1808, the organization was discovered by authorities, and its members suspected of treason and arrested. Hochstetter was imprisoned for a short period of time for his small role in the secret society. Later on, he spent six months as a teacher in a private institution in Erlangen, and afterwards was a tutor for four years in the house of the Minister of Altenstein in Thuringia. The Battle of Höchst (20 June 1622) was fought between a Catholic League (German), Catholic League army led by Johan Tzerclaes, Count of Tilly and a Protestant army commanded by Christian the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, close to the town of Höchst (Frankfurt am Main), Höchst, today a suburb of the city of Frankfurt am Main. The result was a one-sided Catholic League victory. The action occurred during the Thirty Years' War. Background In April 1622, Tilly had lost the Battle of Mingolsheim to Ernst von Mansfeld.
